Goldenrod unfairly attacked T he fall garden is at its peak. The comos, marigolds and petunias are still blooming. The impatiens are brightening up the shady area. The tobac co plant, nicotiana, calls attention by its fragrance. The cutting-grown annuals like verbena tapiens and temari and the million bells trailing petunias in their many colours are making quite an impact. They are changing the looks of the gardens. A major perennial in the landscape is the white flowered hosta. There are some in St. Jude's church garden, a large group on Trafalgar Road and a planting on Morrison Road. Theseare most likely varieties of the August Plantain Lily (plantaginia), which bloom in August/September. It has huge white flower clusters, on 2-3 ft. high stems, over glossy green leaves on a 1- 1/2 ft. high plant, 2 ft. wide. Other late-bloom ing white hosta include `Big Daddy,' 'Blue Angel' and `Blue Blazes' with blue foliage. The grand daddy blue, `Sieboldiana Elegans, ' is the largest most impressive blue leaved white flowered hosta with 3 ft. tall flowers but blooms a little earlier. Hostas are easy to grow in sun or shade. The heavy textured types are resistant to slugs. The August Lily and many others are available from Hortico, Sheridan, and Humber Nurseries. A little shade tolerant shrub flowering now is chelone, or turtle head (the shape of the flower). There are four types: 'Oblique,' a pink native species, 2' tall with shiny leaves; `Lyonia' (often sold as Pink Turtlehead), the bright pink is 4 ft. high. The two white varieties are `Glabraz,' a native inhabitant of moist meadows, 12" high and ` A lba,' a pure white counterpart, and a good cut flower about 2 ft. high. We have grown these for many years in a shady area at the edge of a wood and find them totally inoffensive. They are available at most nurseries, all four varieties are listed by Hortico. They are propagated by seed, cuttings and divi sions. Seeds are available from Thompson and Morgan. The fields and side roads are aglow with goldenrod (solidago). This is a favourite garden plant in Europe for the fall season. Contrary to common belief, yellow goldenrod does not cause hay fever or sneezes. John Valleau notes in the `Heritage Perennial Garden Guide,' that goldenrod has been improved most ly by breeders in England and Germany. They have developed several garden worthy non-invasive selections. Four varieties are `Golden D w a rf (brachystachys), a nice miniature species with loose sprays of gold flowers, useful for edging or in the rock garden. These are three hybrids: `Crown o f R ays' (strahlenkrone), 28" high with a bushy appearance and a compact flower head. `Praecox' is an earlier variety blooming in July. `Lemore ' has large fluffy heads of soft primrose yellow flowers on 30" stems. Goldenrod attracts butterflies and will bring Monarchs to the garden each year. They grow in sun or semi-shade in moist rather than dry soil. Goldenrod looks wonderful among blue leaf hostas. The border varieties of sedum are just coming into bloom. The usual variety is ` Autumn Joy' with massive heads of salmon pink flowers fading to bronzered. They attract bees and butterflies. It is considered one of the top 10 perennials. A contrast to `Autumn Joy' is 24" high `Atropurpureum' with maroon-purple leaves and pink flowers in the fall. Hortico lists several other varieties with variations of leaf and flower colour. The malvas have been in flower in the hospital roof garden since late June. We removed the flowers as they faded. This kept the top growing upward and it con tinued to flower. Some we topped and they bushed out, even growing new side stems lower down. We planted new seedlings every few weeks. As the old bushes slowed down, we replaced them with new flowering bushes potted up ear lier. Last week, I removed several small er plants growing in the cracks in our front walk. In a day or so, they recovered their breath after losing most of their roots and are now upright in 4" pots.
