C2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, September 20, 2000 Crusaders clinch first place The O akville C ru sad ers are no longer gunning for a perfect season but at least they have quickly returned to their winning ways with a hard fought 21-0 win against the Irish Canadians on Saturday. The win improved the Cru's regu lar season record to 11-1 and wrapped up first place in the top Ontario Rugby Union league. The Irish Canadians were on a bit of a roll, themselves, having won five of their previous six games And they brought their A-game to Oakville. But the Crusaders managed to slowly gain the upper hand on the scoreboard, with three consecutive penalty boots by Graham Bridges for a 9-0 lead (6-0 at the half). The Crusaders than closed out with two tries by Ryan Morrison and Chris Foster. Graham Bridges converted the first try. The last perfect season in the ORU was way back in 1983 and the Cru had their hopes dashed unexpectedly in their last game in Ottawa as they lost 25-23 to a Bytown Blues team who were desperate to avoid relega tion. SECOND-XV The Cru second-XV kept their first place hopes alive with a 31-15 win over the Irish Canadian second team. The Cru were behind 8-7 at the half but it was the only time they trailed in the entire game. Kyle McDougall scored that first half try, converted by Christian Evans. The Cru welcomed the wind at their backs for the second half, scoring five tries, including a cou ple by Kent St. Catharine and one by Ob Sealy. N O TES There are two league games left for the Cru FirstXV, both on the road -- Barrie on September 23 and York Yeomen on September 30. Even if the Cru were to lose both o f these games they would still win the league on account o f a superior points record against the Beach team (2 wins against the Beach), the only team left who could possi bly tie them. The McCormick Cup knock out com petition starts on October 7, with the finals on November 4. The Cru 2nd team are sure to qualify for thendivisional playdowns as the last four in the Toronto Rugby Union II Division go through to com pete against each other in the knock out stages. At this stage of the season it looks to be the Crusaders, Yeomen, Beach and Irish Canadians. The third team has already qualified for its end of season competition and as there appears to be only three teams left that have not default ed any games (Crusaders, Beach and Balmy), they'll likely play in a round robin for mat with the top two teams com peting in the finals on November 4. Last year all three o f the Crusaders senior men's teams made thenrespective finals, unfortunately dropping all three games. Naturally, the club hopes to have all three teams back again in the hunt for the champi onship.
