Wednesday, September 27, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER B5 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT rv i, Os X' The St. Andrew 's C hurch Jubilee Join `Fresh Air' celebration By Carol Baldwin ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR Oakville residents will get a breath of Fresh Air tomorrow evening if they head down to the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. Jeff Goodes, host of CBC Radio One's Fresh Air , will be there along with associate producer Barb Dickie and former host Bill McNeil, to mention just a few, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the popular weekend radio show. Those who arrive between 6:30 and 8 p.m. will be able to enjoy a piece of anniversary cake and shmooz a bit with the radio celebrities before the show. The show itself, which begins at 8 p.m., will be a reflec tion of the radio program with interviews, music, and of course, a leisurely trip down memory lane. And although admission is free, seats must be reserved ahead o f time and will be allotted on a first-come-first-served basis. Goodes, who has only been with Fresh Air for the past two years, is enjoying every minute of his hosting job - a step into the limelight from his previous position behind the scenes at Metro Morning and Here and Now. "It was a huge step for me," he said in a telephone inter view. "It's great. I love this job. I love the people I meet...I get to call up people and say, `Do you want to come in and have a nice long, easy conversation with me?" ' The radio show, he said, features a blend of music, interviews and guests from across the country. The music ranges from old classics to contemporary Canadian tunes and the interviews are done "kitchen table" style. "We talk with people about things that you might have a conversation about on a weekend morning - what's happening around the province, a new book that's out; musicians come in and play live in the studio," he explained. "We have storytellers who come in and tell about life where they live." The live show in Oakville will be a reflection of that relaxed format and will feature guests who have been part of Fresh Air over the past 30 years, including the show's first host. Bill McNeil. Jeff Goodes "People love him. It's almost unbelievable, the feelings that people have for this guy," Goodes exclaimed. "When the hospital and park outside her window and play music he was on the show for 22 years, he built up such a loyal for her all-day long to help her get better." following of listeners. It's almost a singular achievement Many more such stories are waiting to be told at the in radio - the community of friends that he created. He's Fresh Air anniversary celebration tomorrow evening. There's only one."
