OAKVILLE By Malcolm Gunn SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER W www.oakuillehondwcom hether you call him a racing actor, or an acting racer, Paul Newman continues to experience life in the 905 844-9831 - Oakville 2000, PROTEGE SE MHIISISKlflra Consumer Reports fast lane. For years women have swooned over his sparkling, blue eyes and killer smile. Men also have secretly (or not so secretly) coveted his on-screen grace and grit. But, for the past quarter-centu ry or more, fans of either gender have come to admire his tenacity and skill as a race driver and race team head honcho. The majority of professional drivers take up the sport very early in life. The most common progres sion is to begin with go-karting or dirt-bikes while still in the single digit age bracket and advance through a chain of increasingly larger, more powerful and expensive racing machin ery. Eventually, if they're very talented, blindingly fast and ever so lucky, they arrive at the pinnacle of one of the top champi onship classes such as Formula One, CART, IRL, NASCAR or a host of other disciplines. Paul Newman's transition from matinee idol to serious racer took a more circuitous route. Newman's introduction to the racing scene made a huge impression on the then 43-year-old actor, and short ly after the movie's release he began to pursue his new hobby. Newman's first winning event as an amateur occurred in 1972 at Thompson, Conn., where he drove a Lotus Elan. Four years later, the actor had earned his first Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) national title fol lowed by a further class championship in 1979. Newman scored his first professional victory with the SCCA's Trans-Am series at Brainerd, Minn, in 1982. He then followed with champi onships in the GT-1 class in 1985 and 1986. Along with his personal racing activities, Newman also fielded his own team for five years in the Can-Am racing series, employing top-notch drivers including Danny Sullivan, Bobby Rahal and A1 Unser, among others. In 1983, Newman became a part team owner in the big-league Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) circuit, part nering with former racing driver and race car importer Carl Haas to form NewmanHaas Racing. Their first dri ver was Mario Andretti who had previously won both the Indy 500 in 1969 and the Formula One championship in 1978. The experienced and talented Andretti fin ished third overall in the team's inaugural year and followed that by winning the series championship in 1984. By 1989, Newman/Haas had added a second driver to the team, Mario's son MichaeL The younger Andretti, already a five-sea son veteran in Champ (Indy) cars, contributed with two victories and finished the season third in the overall standings (father Mario fin ished sixth). In 1991, it was Michael's turn to claim the CART championship for Newman/Haas, winning eight races, establishing records for the fastest lap at 15 race courses and earning nearly $2.5-million in the process. Two seasons later, with the younger Andretti off to try his luck in Formula One, Newman-Haas hired 1992 Grand Prix champion Nigel Mansell. There were plenty of skeptics who doubted the 40-year old Brit and CART `rookie' could be competi tive in a Champ car. But Mansell proved he could win in any league, taking six pole positions and five checkered flags en route to the title. Mario Andretti, who would retire from CART in 1994, won his 52nd and final race of his career, finishing sixth in the standings. In the ensuing years, the team founded by Paul Newman and Carl Haas has remained competitive with Michael Andretti, who returned to the team in 1995 following his short-lived stint on the Grand Prix cir cuit. Newman-Haas has also employed Christian Fittipaldi as their number two driver since 1996. As for Paul Newman, the now 75-year old actor, who has raced in both the Daytona and Le Mans 24hour endurance events, con tinues to drive competitive ly. His most recent race was in February 2000, where engine failure prevented him from finishing the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. Any plans Paul Leonard Newman has for retirement, whether in front of the cam era or behind the wheel, appear to be far beyond the next bend in the road. Lessen the pinch at the pump (NC)-As gasoline prices continue to pinch the wallets of Canadians, many motorists have reduced the kilometres they drive, looked for cheaper gas or even cancelled road trips. Gas prices throughout Canada have soared to more than 70 cents a litre in many cities, leaving most drivers frustrat ed and wondering when prices will come down. In the meantime, however, in order to offset rising fuel costs, motorists should make sure their tires are inflated properly. Tires play a major role in fuel efficiency, and their impor tance is growing as costs climb, according to Bill Egan, chief engineer of advanced product design for Goodyear. Back in 1995, the U.S. Energy Department said underin flated tires wasted an estimated 4 million gallons of gas daily in America. That can be expensive at these prices, Egan said.
