Wednesday September 27, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A3 Walk raises $ 10,000 to help curb violence against animals The Oakville & District Humane Society's (OHS) first annual walkathon on Saturday raised $10,000 for violence pre vention toward animals. The event, held at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre, attracted about 150 peo ple "despite the weather," who brought 60 to 70 dogs with them for the 3.5 km. walk, reports Johanne Golder, OHS manager. "It was fantastic, wonderful. The walk was just excellent. It exceeded our expecta tions for a first time event," said Golder. The walk was preceded by a opening ceremony with Carol Mott of CFRB's The Motts, and ended with a Fly Ball demon stration. The money will be used for violence towards animals prevention programs, and increase public awareness of the link between animal abuse and human violence. `Today, violence and its effects are wide spread and the connection between human violence and animal cruelty has been proven," says Golder. The OHS is initiating a local Violence Prevention Coalition to "help social service, health, community and law enforcement professionals understand the issues and develop effective intervention policies and programs." On July 19th the victim was at P h i 1 t h y McNastys on the North Service in Oakville when he attempted to assist in breaking up a fight between two other males. When the vic tim became involved in this matter, he attempted to grab a male who was punching anoth er. When he did this, he was punched in the right bicep. When the victim checked his injuries, he noticed that he had in fact been stabbed. The victim was bleeding and received stitches at hospital.
