Ellie Van Vliet Halton Regional Police Constable Ellie Van V liet was awarded the Com m unity Service Award by the International Association of Women Police. The award was presented at the associa tion's conference in Toronto last week. Van Vliet is a 14-year-year veteran o f the Halton Regional Police Service and has spent the past 10 years as the kerr Street Village Constable. Van V liet's nomination included many letters and commendations by people from the Kerr Street community, which consists of a diverse makeup of m erchants, seniors, children, teenagers and people with special needs. "The Kerr Street com m unity is simply the most interesting , m ost challenging and most w onderful com m unity in all o f Halton R egion," said Van Vliet. As part of her com m unity involvement. Van V liet was instrum ental in making a local basketball program for youths affordable by seeking out sponsors for the program. She is also involved with the O akville Santa Claus Parade Com m ittee, the Kerr Community Consultation Com m ittee and the Oakwood School Breakfast Club. Former mayoralty candidate seeks Ward 2 seat David Bazar, who challenged Mayor Ann Mulvale in the 1997 municipal election has decid ed to run for Regional Councillor in Ward 2 this time around. The position was formerly held by Kathy Graham, who resigned last May, and is currently held by appointee Rajneesh Sharda. Upon accept ing his appointment, Sharda indicated he would not run in the election. Bazar is the fourth candidate to enter the race for Ward 2 Regional Councillor. Former regional councillor Fred Oliver, David B. P. Lee, Barry Lee, an unsuccessful candidate in the last election and Simon Dann are the other candidates. Bazar is a chartered accountant and partner of Bazar McBean Chartered Accountants in down town Oakville. Bazar is licenced as a Chartered Accountant in Ontario and Quebec, and as a Certified Public Accountant in the United States. He has taken advanced certificate studies with the University of W indsor's dispute resolution program. Bazar is currently a Roster Mediator for the Ontario Ministry of Justice and is called upon to mediate court cases. Bazar is a former Big Brother, Kinsman and Director o f the Oakville Chamber of Commerce. David Bazar Bazar received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Guelph in 1978 and a Graduate Diploma in Public Accountancy from McGill University in 1981.
