Wednesday October 4, /uuu THE OAKvlLLt BEAVER Premier bullish on Sheridan's new high-tech centre Mike Harris liked w hat he saw...and handed over $4.6 m illion for staffing By Carol Baldwin OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Prem ier Mike Harris and Jim Wilson, Minister of Energy, Science and Technology, visited Sheridan College on Monday to announce the Ontario government's $4.6-million con tribution to a $13.8-million project for new media research at the Sheridan Centre for Animation and Emerging Technologies (SCAET). The province's contribution is ear marked for the hiring of faculty at the new facility at the Oakville campus. The provincial government is also spending $7.2 million that will enable 400 more students to enrol in Sheridan courses by adding 15 new classrooms and 33 new labs. After a warm welcome, the premier was taken on a tour of new SCAET building, visiting classrooms and asking questions of some of the students and their instructors. In the new Visualization Design Institute he was introduced to a bio medical research program in which ani mation is applied to "real world prob lem-solving." He also met a young man who was swinging a golf club, dressed in an out fit that would not be fashionable on most golf courses. The student was attached to a number of electrodes which sent messages to a computer each time he swung the club. The ultimate goal of this experiment is to perfect the golfer's swing and fine tune the golf club. "W hat w e've learned so far," quipped Harris, "is your swing needs a lot of work." The student, who admitted he wasn't a golfer, immediately asked the former golf pro for some tips, which the pre mier readily offered. The student was obviously a quick study since the pre mier commented, as he resumed the tour, "That's it. Now, you've got it." The prem ier's casual manner done here," said Harris, adding the modem equipment will give students an edge when they enter the "real world" after graduation. In fact, Harris hopes that filmmakers in the Toronto area who have had to live with the label `Hollywood North' will ultimately be calling Hollywood `Ontario South'. "In the meantime, we'll tag along with them as we continue to try to leapfrog as best we can," he said, adding that it isn't just location and cost that bring the filmmakers north. "It's mostly about people; and it's mostly about technology; and it's mostly about creativity. Our high-tech capabilities are world class. Ontario students clearly have what it takes to succeed in a com petitive, global economy." Harris suggested that SCAET was part of the province's vision for educa tion and for technological training. In particular, he added, animation has become a vital component in the movie and computer industries, being used more and more in the areas of special effects and Internet services. "Every time we go to the movies or check out new graphics on the web, we're seeing pride in what's happening right here at Sheridan. So I can't wait for a new movie to open, so I can see more of that animation," he said. "It has been pointed out to me today that Sheridan alumni, who are in the leading studios and companies all around the world, are volunteering to come back and donate their time back to Sheridan and to the current crop of stu dents who are here. We're working with Sheridan to make sure our students get access to the best animation training." The premier not only stressed the importance of his government's injec tion of funds into SCAET, but praised the college's innovation and applauded the private sector partnerships that have been forged to ensure the continuing success of the new Oakville facility. "Those ties will ensure that Sheridan grads are always on the leading edge, always learning the latest technologies, and always ahead of the competition," he said. "By working together, you're making sure Ontario will continue to be at the forefront of this exciting field for many years to come. And I look forward to enjoying Sheridan's success in the future."
