It was exciting to see so many amazing groups in Halton working towards making us a leader in employing per sons living with disabilities. After our roundtable, Oakville restaurateur Julia Hanna, owner of Oakville' s Ristorante Julia and Ritorno, committed to hiring five new em ployees living with disabilities in her restaurants. Open and honest discussions about barriers to employment for individuals with disabilities is an important first step in changing perceptions. Too often fear and misinformation prevent employers from offering meaningful job experi ences to individuals of all skill levels. One of my goals is to make Halton the most inclusive community in Canada. No airplane noise, low-flying air craft directly over our home in north Oakville. We were flying back into Pearson airport a few weeks ago and when we were delayed cir cling before landing, the pilot came over the loud speaker and announced that Toronto Pearson International Airport had recently started repairs /reconstruction to one of the main runways and that it was to be closed for several months and all flights were being diverted to alternate runways for landing. My husband and I, upon hearing this, became concerned, as over the last few years the airplane noise and low-flying aircraft have become an increasing issue in our area, and we were con cerned that this would further increase the noise, frequency, etc. How delighted to find out that it is the run way that causes our noise pollution issue that is closed down. Let' s hope it stays closed down all summer so that we can get outside and enjoy our garden and pool without the interruption every two minutes to our conversation. Some Sunday afternoons, there are planes di rectly overhead every two minutes, all afternoon. We have called in and emailed our concerns over the last few years since the changes to the Lettertothe Editor A vacation from airplane circling pattern for landing started to fly directly overhead. Nav Canada has repeatedly responded that for increased safety, it had to increase the diam eter of the circling to land in certain wind direc tions, thus putting the aircraft directly over our Oakville River Oaks area. We have been following the news in the B ea ver and the actions as a result. Just wondering how Pearson can still operate safely without the use of this runway. And if it can, why can't it be permanently closed? Maybe it should be adding additional run ways where they are landing now? We purchased our home 20 years ago and there was no airplane noise at that time and we would never have purchased it with the noise pollution the way it has been recently. If and when the runway reopens, can it not reconsider the circling pattern and have it go over the lake instead, where there are no homes? Let' s hope there will be a satisfactory resolu tion to this issue. And in the meantime, we will really appreci ate the quiet -- hopefully all summer!
