It' s the second phase of Project Safe Commute. "Officers from Halton Regional Police Service' s (HRPS') three Dis trict Response Units will team up and target identified high-risk road ways within the Town of Oakville as part of Project Safe Commute," said Sgt. Gus Bistas, District Re sponse Unit. Project Safe Commute was de veloped in response to concerns expressed by Halton residents about aggressive driving, par ticularly during the morning and afternoon com mutes. The first phase of the initiative was completed in Milton and Halton Hills in late March. Officers pro-actively monitor driving behaviours that place road users at the greatest risk, namely distracted driving, aggressive driv ing, drivers and passengers failing to wear seat belts, and speeding. Project Safe Commute will take place in Burlington later this year. Project Safe Commute and oth ers are part of the local police ser vice' s broader Community First policing philosophy that focuses on four principles of community safety and well being: emergency response, risk intervention, prevention, and social development.
