People can drop by the Y at 410 Rebecca St. and children can participate in free activities, learning to live a healthy lifestyle together as a family; YMCA Healthy Kids Day will be celebrated at Ys across Canada the same day; There will also be free food and music by DJ Neecy The event will take place at the Peter Gilgan Family YMCA, 410 Rebecca St., from 10:45 a.m.3 p.m. Activities include: · Opening ceremony with a traditional smudge ceremony and Inuit high-kicking, bum hop and more, hosted by traditional knowledge keeper Stephen Paquette and Darryl Day · Taste of Canada featuring a variety of local restaurants · Master Chef Family -- compete as a family in a Canadian cooking challenge judged by Stephanie Brewster, winner of the Chopped Canada TV show and Julia Hanna, an Oakville restaurateur · Video time capsule -- a time capsule will be created to be opened during the Oakville YMCAs 100 th birthday. Oakville Galleries will host it. · Nature hike at Bronte Creek Provincial Park -- a guided walk through the Bronte park and apple trees will be planted. Transportation provided to and from the park. According to the 2016 YMCA Healthy Kids Day survey, Ontario parents acknowledge barriers to leading a healthy lifestyle include a lack of time (45 per cent), work/life balance (39 per cent) and energy or motivation (28 per cent). The experience is similar with parents from across Canada Parents identifying the same barriers. More than 33 per cent of Canadian children aged five to 17 are reported as being overweight. National Youth Week May 1-7 Sunday, April 30 also marks the start of National Youth Week at the YMCA. Following YMCA Healthy Kids Day National Youth Week, May 1-7, will celebrate youth participation in the community and will be marked in Oakville with a variety of free activities for those aged 13-29.
