w w w .insideH A LT O N .com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, A pril 2 7 , 2 0 1 7 | 2 2 G et moving to help D efeat Depression on May 6 by Nathan Howes Oakville Beaver Staff Physical exercise can be beneficial mentally, as well as physically, which is why Oakville residents are encouraged to help Defeat Depression Saturday, May 6. Defeat Depression is a national mental health awareness, anti-stigma and fundraising campaign that raises awareness and reduces stigma for people affected by depression and other mood disorders. The local walk takes place Saturday, May 6 at Oakville' s Lion' s Valley Park, the third gathering organized by Distress Centre Halton (DCH), which helps individuals in Oakville and surrounding area with mental health and other issues through a telephone support line. Across Canada, volunteers will organize walks, runs and other physical and social activities to get people talking about and moving for mental health. According to DCH, physical activities such as walking and running, along with community engagement and social interaction, have a positive effect on mental health. "Getting out there and doing something physical in a social capacity does help people who are coping with depression," said Brenda Buchanan, DCH manager of volunteer and client services. "Going out for a walk isn't all of a sudden Defeat Depression takes place in Lion's Valley Park Saturday, May 6. | submitted photo going to change your depression or make you not have depression anymore, but it' s one of the many things you can do to help," said Buchanan. It also helps raise awareness about mental health issues. In 2016, about 80 people took part in Defeat Depression and the organization is hoping for the same turnout this year. Buchanan said the walk is fairly short as participants can choose from a three- or fivekilometre distance on walk day. "It' s a lovely area, lovely walk," said Buchanan, of Lion' s Valley Park. Distress Centre Halton has set a goal of raising $15,000 at this year' s walk, with about 50 per cent of the target reached as of April 21. Buchanan noted 75 per cent of the funds will support the distress line at DCH while the remaining money will go towards the Mood Disorders Society of Canada. "It' s very important for us to raise funds to help keep the phone lines open here in Halton," said Buchanan, noting the group has about 100 volunteers and receives more than 1,000 calls every month. "We provide a lot of really important support to members of the Halton community." Distress Centre Halton recently changed its name from Distress Centre Oakville to Halton because it is now a regional service with two locations -- Oakville and Georgetown, Buchanan said. The locations, Oakville and North Halton, are streamlining services under the Halton banner. "Hopefully, by the end of this year, we will have a new phone system so we will be able to share resources in that way, as well," said Buchanan. Defeat Depression takes place Saturday, May 6 at Lion' s Valley Park, 2417 Fourth Line. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk/ run will begin at 10 a.m. There is no minimum fee to participate.
