w w w .insideH A LT O N .com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, A pril 2 7 , 2 0 1 7 | 3 0 Tourney ended season on high note continued from p.12 Peru won the tournament, while the Oakville school reached the "octo-finals" -- a term used for the round comprised of the top 16 teams -- after debating six preliminary matchups, of which, it won four. Over the three days, WOSS faced competitors from Peru, Mexico, U.S. and Canada, while it featured 51 teams from countries representing nearly every continent. Guthrie said all four students have been a "great help to me" for several summers, serving on the coaching staff with Guthrie at our summer debate camp that runs during the last week in August. "They have helped infect the next generation of debaters with their own enthusiasm and dedication," said Guthrie. Vahed, 18-year-old Grade 12 student, said reaching the octo-finals was a surprise, even though the students were "aiming" for victory. "We stayed up until 2 a.m. reworking our octos case over (ice cream) after finding out we broke (into the octo-finals). That pretty much sums up the intensity and fun you get from debate tournaments," said Vahed, noting she has been debating since Grade 10. Aside from the result, the tournament was particularly "unique for a few reasons," Vahed said, including it being the students' first time on the Harvard campus. Besides preparing the competition, the WOSS group spent time exploring the school, I This was a coo I experience as we realized how much work it took getting us to tournaments - registering, paying invoices, booking flights and a hotel, finding transportation to and from Harvard campus and finding places to eat. It was also our last debate tournament in hgih school, so this was a really good way of ending it with a bang.
