On Sept. 20, 2016, Halton police of ficers were following Grayson Delong, 51, as part of an investigation related to property crimes in Burlington. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) took control of the case, invoking its mandate to investigate when police of ficers are involved in incidents where someone has been seriously injured, dies or alleges sexual assault. The SIU rules if an officer should face criminal charges. In a statement this week, the SIU stat ed Delong was shot by an undercover Halton officer seconds after Delong is alleged to have shot defence lawyer Randall Barrs in the leg outside Barrs' office on Bedford Road in Toronto. Delong got back into his vehicle and tried to drive away when a Halton plainclothes officer shot at Delong' s ve hicle three times, hitting Delong twice, said the SIU. Delong survived. He currently faces 15 charges including attempted mur der. His case is still before the courts. "At this time I wish to publicly com mend each of our officers for the roles they played that day; They were able to effectively intervene in a rapidly unfold ing, life-threatening incident," said Hal ton Police Chief Stephen Tanner. "While we may never know for sure, these officers quite possibly saved the life of the victim who had been shot. Following the initial incident the offi cers rendered medical assistance at the scene until Toronto (paramedics) ar rived. Tanner said every Halton officer connected to the bizarre case co-operat ed with the SIU. "I am extremely proud of our team. All of the involved officers, including the subject officer, co-operated fully with the SIU. This included (the sub ject officer) submitting to an interview, which he was not required to do." The shootings highlight the potential dangers and split-second decisions as sociated with being a police officer, said Tanner. "No police officer wants to be placed in a situation of having to con sider, never mind actually using, deadly force. However, we know from this and many other similar, serious cases across the country it can be a requirement of our highly-trained and professional of ficers..."
