Wednesday, November 8, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C5 B e s t W h e e l s O a k v i l l e Impressive field in economy class (Continued from page C2) Remember, you won't see every car or truck listed here. Only brand new entries or models that have undergone significant powertrain or struc tural changes are eligible for the competition. We'll look at some of the other categories over the following weeks but for this week, in alphabetical order, we'll concentrate on the practical and start with: the Elantra base GL starts at a modest $14,500 and includes CD player, tachometer and bat tery saver. Add $2200 for a VE model and you get a pretty good package with A/C, auto matic, power and cruise. Good warranty - 5years powertrain and 3 years bumper-tobumper. Engine:2.0L/140hp/l 331b -fit Fuel Economy: BEST NEW ECONOMY CAR (under $18,000) Honda Civic DX Sedan The new Honda Civic for 2001 is a much-improved ver sion of the beloved best-seller. Building on that solid base, Honda attempted to add a sense of fun, sporty styling and value to the entry-level DX sedan. Dimensions have changed with a stubbier front end, more room between the seats, a flat rear floor and an enlarged trunk. The 1.7L engine is bigger and enhanced with more mid-range torque. Best powertrain of the bunch. Still noisy under acceleration though. The 5-speed manual shifter is a joy. Improvements include 3-point seat belts in all positions, dual stage airbags, larger tires, bigger brake rotors and an added stabilizer bar in front. Lightweight and fuelefficient for its size. Engine: 1.71V115hp/l 101bft 9.6L/6.5L/100km (city/hwy) Wheelbase: 2610mm Length: 4495mm CurbWt: 1241kg Price as Tested: $15,000 Kia Rio This latest Korean entry now lists as one of the cheapest sets of wheels in Canada. This lightweight starts at just under $12K and features "cute-as-abug" exterior styling, a taut interior finish superior to previ ous economy offerings and a fair amount of standard equip ment, including AM/FM/CD. The 290L trunk even includes what the demonstrator referred to as an "anti-Sopranos device" (trunk release). Rear seating is tight however - it's the smallest car here - and will require com promise by front occupants. I tested the automatic version earlier this year and deemed it a slug but the manual surprised me. Also the smallest engine in the bunch, but as I rowed through the gears with enthusi asm, even the Sentra behind me had trouble keeping up. Engine: 1.5L/96hp/981b-ft Fuel Economy: smooth and aerodynamic and a Europeanstyled interior that's cleaner and more refined The base XE starts at $15,298 and comes with a starter set of equipment and niceties - a 1.8L engine, 5-speed manual shifter, dual airbags, cloth interior, tilt steering, 2-speed wipers. The GXE adds a few more goodies. Nissan paid particular attention to emissions earning a ULEV rat ing. Nice all-round car. Customers agree. Nissan is on pace to sell four times as many Sentras as last year. Engine: 1.8L/126hp/1291b-ft Fuel Economy: 8.8L/6.2L/100km (city/hwy) Wheelbase: 2535mm Length: 4509mm CurbWt: 1165kg Price as Tested: $17,698 In summary, the new crop of economy cars offer Canadians a wider choice of more refined products that, for the most part, are selling for about the same price as last year's models. Regardless of journalist scores, a price factor built into each ballot automatically adjusts the final vote tally. The Kia Rio offers a new entry-level option for economy-minded consumers and the best bottom line, but in this com petition, the "as tested" price of the LS model entered comes too close to the price levels of the larger entries. The Hyundai Elantra offers larger accommodations, a bigger engine and almost enough refine ment to compete on a level playing field with Japanese competitors. The Nissan Sentra offers excellent value and is a strong contender for top spot but for my money, the best combination of equipment value and price for this category, and my bet as winner of the Best New Economy (under $18,000) for 2001, is the new Honda Civic. Eight years after its initial intro, the new thirdgeneration Elantra is bigger, longer, wider and taller. The largest car in this category, also with the biggest engine - a 2.0L 4 cylinder. The interior is more refined but still Spartan with the same old tic-tac button radio.
