Ivor Wynne date for Loyola seniors next Thursday L oyola earned a date at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton next Thursday (Nov. 16), at noon, with a 15-8 overtime win over cross town rival St. Thom as A quinas in last Friday's tier one senior boys consola tion football final. Loyola will meet up with Bishop Reding who defeated O akville Trafalgar 41-13. A missed field goal by Loyola in the last play of regulation time sent the teams into overtime (two fiveminute halves, not sudden death) tied at 8-8. Loyola, however, were able to turn the missed field goal into ju st a footnote when they scored a touch down in the final minute o f overtime. "It was exciting to watch," agreed Loyola coach Keith Boyd. "But it's a different perspective on the side lines." / FOOTBALL Division one (SENIOR) S E N IO R T IE R O N E C H A M P IO N S H IP , th is Friday (Nov. 10), 1 0 :30 a.m . a t Ivo r W y n n e S ta d iu m : N e ls o n v s N o tre D a m e . McCusker Revamped Bruins 11-2 in pre-season The Sheridan College men's basketball team will certainly have a different look heading into the upcoming season. For the first time in four years, they enter the season without Shane Bascoe who capped off his final year of eligibility, last season, by being chosen as the Canadian college player of the year. With one year of university eli gibility available to him, he is suit ing up this year for Guelph. Bascoe, who was an early national basketball camp invitee, earned a number of other honours last season which included the Ontario inaugural male college athlete o f the year and being named to the all-millenium provin cial college team (the only active player to be so chosen). But time moves on and so has Bascoe and other stalwarts. In fact, only three players are back from last year's squad which were upset by archrival Humber in the provincial championships. The good news, though, is that the three returnees are all starters, and that the traditionally strong Sheridan program has attracted some talented freshmen. The three returnees are point guard Elvis Dennis, forward Hugh Bent and centre Ricardo Edwards. Sheridan's 11-2 pre-season record indicates the torch has been caught by the new line-up. The team has two more exhibi tion games lined up -- traveling to Algonquin and St. Lawrence -- before opening the season at home on Friday, Nov. 17 against Centennial at 7:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the team recently finished third in the tough Dawson tournament in Montreal with two wins over Dawson (74-58 and 7361), Montmorency (80-66) and Vanier (86-60). Sheridan failed to advance to the final after blowing a 17-point second half lead and losing a tough one to SAIT (Alberta), 90-89. "Our inexperience showed in that game," said Bruins head coach Jim Flack, who has also become Sheridan's manager of athletics and recreation. "But it's something we can definitely learn from." The Bruins also fared well in the Laurentian University tourna ment, losing 86-79 to the hosts and beating Lakehead University from Thunder Bay 93-82. Sheridan won their annual pre season tournament -- the Bruins Bash -- whipping St. Clair 81-55 in the gold medal game. The Bruins broke a 20-20 tie with a 23-11 run to end the first half, and never looked back. Hugh Bent, a tournament allstar, led the way at both ends of the court with 14 points and seven steals. Freshman Vance King, the tour nament MVP, added 13 points along with another newcomer, Yuri Browne. Ricardo Edwards was a force defensively throughout the week end, grabbing eight rebounds and adding four blocks. He was also named an all-star. "It was a nice win," said Flack, "but we're not where I want to be if we want to contend. We can be better defensively." In round robin action, Sheridan defeated Cambrian 81-64 (Bent 16), Edward Monpetit 94-64 (freshman Kevin Dennis 23) and Champlain 77-60 (King and Browne each with 13). File Photo by Peter C. McCusker The Bruins Ricardo Edwards is one of only three returnees this year. But the squad still has high hopes.
