(Service Industry Night) Devils earn OFSAA bronze The Oakville Trafalgar senior girls field hockey team have mixed feelings about their provincial OFSAA field hockey bronze medal. Mind you, most of them good are good ones. After all, they were seeded 10th in the 10-team tournament and to come away with a medal "speaks for itself," said their longtime coach Shirley Vogt. Actually the only mixed feeling for the veteran team -- which will lose eight OAC players, along with coach Vogt who plans to focus on officiating next season -- was a controversial call in their semifinal game which cost them a goal. And it turned out to be the differ ence in a 2-1 loss to top seeded St. Pius X from Ottawa. The Red Devils' goal that did stand in that game was by Lisa Robertson. The Red Devils', however, were over the call by the time the bronze medal match came around and that enabled them to knock off number two seeded Agincourt, 2-0. The game was scoreless until the last five m inutes of play when Oakville Trafalgar was awarded a penalty comer. Katie Zwir placed a perfect pass on to the stick of Sarah Vogt and she placed a perfect shot into the far comer of the net. Lindsey Stuart added an insurance goal in the final minute of play. The bronze medal capped off a great season for the team. In 31 games over the past seven weeks, they won 23, tied five and lost just three games. In the process, they outscored their opposition 98-9. `T heir success is credited to team work, commitment and enthusiasm," said coach Vogt. Oakville Trafalgar did have the breaks going their way following the conclusion of the preliminary round in which they were undefeated but with only one win -- albeit a crucial one -- to go along with three ties. They opened with three straight ties, all 1-1, against L om e Park, Agincourt and Havergal College. Three different Red Devil scorers chipped in -- Stephanie Gulledge, Caroline Kaars-Sijpesteijn and Lisa Robertson. The team 's crucial, m ust-win, fourth game was against a powerful North Hastings team, which Oakville Trafalgar won 1-0 on a goal by Lindsey Stuart. At that point, however, the playoff picture was far from clear and the Red Devils turned their attention to a final prelim inary round robin game between Agincourt and Lome Park. Agincourt led 1-0 for most o f the game, and for Oakville Trafalgar that would have meant suiting back up and engaging in penalty flicks with Lome Park to determine who would advance to the semifinals. But when Agincourt added a sec ond goal with literally seconds remaining, the biggest cheers came from Oakville Trafalgar because it then gave them goal differential advantage over Lome Park who were eliminated. (Oakville Trafalgar would still have been alive with a Lom e Park win over Agincourt). Claire Dyason, a rookie goalie for the Devils, "faced numerous shots throughout the tourney and played like a veteran," said coach Vogt. lE v »World Famous Tuesdays · DJ Dancing 10 pm · NTN Showdown /W E D N E S D A Y 1Fajitas Night 2 for 1 $ 1 2 .9 9 (offer 5 pm) Imports Eveiy THURSDAY Pitchers Night DJ Dancing 10 pm SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY EVINTS T h u rs d a y .
