The feature, brought to you by Canadian Tire (at the Upper Oakville Shopping Centre on Upper Middle Road at 8th Line and at Oaktown Shopping Plaza at 550 KetT Street), highlights the accomplishments of our local athletes right from grass roots entry level to elite national and inter national. A photo and short summary is helpful (just in case we do not have it in our backfiles). As described in the ESR, the preferred solution involves constructing erosion protection works consisting of armourstone revetments, groynes, a shore connected breakwater, a detached breakwater, islands to shelter the natural bluffs, and the enhancement of shingle beaches. The ESR was prepared in accordance with the Class Environmental Assessment for Remedial Flood and Erosion Control projects approved for projects of this type. The Oakville Thunder are a brand new midget girls vol leyball team competing in the very com petitive Ontario Volleyball Association system. This new team is com prised o f 15 girls, in grades 9 and 10, and currently include 13 from St. Thom as Aquinas and two from Oakville Trafalgar high schools. The team has been practising since the beginning o f September but many o f the players have been com peting either together or against each other since elementary school. This new edition to the OVA turned a few heads this past weekend as they com peted qver the O c t 28-29 weekend in the Provincial Cup in Waterdown. As a new team, the Thunder entered the tourney seeded 10th out o f 10 teams but it didn't take long to see they were under ranked. The Thunder began the day by handing #2 seed Peel Selects `85 two straight losses. They then went on to post victories over Burlington Blaze (#3 seed), Thistletown and Waterdown. By this point, people had begun to notice the new kids on the block. The Thunder received a bye into the quarterfinals and met Peel Selects `86 in the semis, walking away with a convinc ing 2-0 victory. Their roll was finally stopped in the cham pionship m atch as they bowed 2-0 (25-23, 25-16) to Georgetown Impact, last year's bantam champs). Finishing second means the Thunder will com pete in the tier one division of their next tournament, facing even m ore o f the best teams in Ontario and that is exactly where their coaches want them to be. `T o become the best you have to beat the best," said coach Peter Szpakowski. "At the same tim e w a don't think anyone will be taking us lightly or ranking usM st anymore. "We've got a lot o f talent and some hard working girls."
