David Bazar Would fight gridlock says Oliver in Ward 2 By Fred Oliver j Candidate for Regional Council Ward 2 I, Fred Oliver, am seeking the office of Regional Councillor for Ward 2, as I have the time to serve full-time and have 14 years expe rience as a Regional Councillor. We need to do something about the traffic gridlock, the envi ronment, and the growth of our Town. We need to ensure that the growth is affordable, well-planned and environmentally sound. Council must also ensure that our present citizens and facilities are adequately serviced. If elected, I will strive to cor rect the traffic gridlock, ensure we have safe homes, streets and schools, improve the communica tion between the public, staff and councils, and closely monitor the overall administration at both the Town and the Region with a view to maintaining taxes as reasonable as possible. There are areas which need attention and action such as some of our facilities, Transit Service, bicycle paths, and duck routes. I believe in efficiency at all lev els and will strive to see that the citizens receive the best and most for their tax dollar. After 10 years of following our municipal coun cil, including my involvement at provincial and federal levels, I believe we need to renew our focus at the municipal and regional councils if we want to determine the quality of our lives and what we're surrounded by. Municipal politics is no longer a sleepy activity to be driven by either a narrow personal agenda or old century attitudes. I will bring Ward 2 new ideas backed by a wide range of experience to work at the issues in our community. For skills we need now are more strategic in nature. I will use my experi ence to build a case for new businesses to come to Kerr Street and to work out the return of some form of bank operation to Kerr. At the same time, people are asking for a farmer's market at Westside and Kerr and for Council to rezone Speers to make it more retail tenant friendly. With the right council leadership, these can be achieved. In the Coronation Park area, the waste treatment plant is outdated and the smell has been especially rank. We need political leadership to bring about facility updating as well as service improvements. Whether in planning, deve opment, or infrastructure capacities, we are facing sig nificant environmental issues that will need to be managed with the future in mind. The changing role of the fire department and increasing involvement in information, education, hazardous mate rials, calls for a review of Simon Dann manpower allocation and crew numbers, especially for emergency response. The Dorval Drive extension study is another issue that doesn't reflect resident interests and this needs to be addressed before it goes any further. Ward 2 is ready for new regional council repre sentation with vision, ideas, and the commitment to push for change and service improvements. While it's impossible to cover all the issues of interest here, I've heard about many of them in the past month and believe that many of them can have a positive outcome if we have energetic and commit ted council support With your vote, I will make that happen.
