O f course, great prices and lively entertainment aren t the only reasons you should tune in: we ve looked at some of O a k v i l l e the community projects two o f the organizing Rotary U C T Clubs (Oakville Trafalgar and Oakville North) support so far. Today, its Oakville West s turn. President Jean Fletcher says she can t get over the generosity o f our town when it comes to helping others less fortunate. Oakville is just an amazing and giving community, she says. approximately 40 to 70 local senior high school students, along with outstanding local business leaders, explore the advantages o f the free enterprise system in four days o f fun, learning and communicating. Perhaps the biggest youth project the Club is involved with is the Oakville Awards for Academic Excellence program. We encourage and reward academic accomplishments, explains Jean, by presenting eight students from local high schools with a scholarship. This is, in fact, the eighth year that Oakville West has presented the Academic Excellence and Community Service Scholarship awards. There are also four awards in each school for academic achievement, and five awards for academic excellence and/or achievement for underJ jf r graduate students. Money for the scholarships is raised at an pr incredibly successful event, the Awards for Business Excellence dinner held each February at the Rattlesnake Golf and Country Club. Proceeds from the always sold-out event go the scholarship fund. Ro t a r y q 1 u A The Club has also supported the Sparky Dog program for a 1,1 number o f years, by providing funds to the Oakville Fire Department for the purchase of stuffed Dalmatian dogs. When the Fire Department is called out to the scene of a trauma involv ing children, they leave behind the Sparky Dogs in an attempt to ease the suffering and shock they may have experienced. Ian Anderson House is another recipient o f the generosity of Oakville West. The House, which provides a comfortable, homey setting for ter minally ill cancer patients who have left hospital, received a $1,000 donation earlier this year which enabled them to buy a bed. The House, located at Winston Churchill and Lakeshore, is such a meaningful pro ject that four Burlington Rotary clubs are trying to build a similar one in their own community. Your generous support at the Auction will help Oakville West, and the two other Rotary Clubs involved, to support even more community projects. Jennifer Kay, a member o f the Rotary Club o f Oakville Trafalgar, han dles marketing and promotions fo r the Auction. Oakville West has pledged to donate $10,000 to the new YMCA facili ty being built on Rebecca Street, each year for the next five years! Jean is thrilled that the YMCA reaches beyond just youth in our community to help adults and seniors as well. Dreams Take Flight is another source o f pride for the Club. Last May, an Oakville West Rotarian accompanied four physically challenged children from local homes on a one-day adventure to Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The group meets at the airport at 5 a.m. on the appointed day, join hundreds o f other children to fly down south via Air Canada to spend the day fulfilling many dreams.
