"We lived four doors apart in the same North Toronto neighbourhood," reflects Isobel Winnett. "George was 13 and I was 14 when we met and became high school sweethearts. We dated for about 15 years before getting married." That was Nov. 2, 1940, "the end of the Depression and the beginning of World War n ," remembers George. Isobel got a job as a book keeper at the University of Toronto Press, and remained there for five years, "until we got married." George went on to study chemical engineering at the University of Toronto's School of Practical Science, and worked at Continental Can in Chicago as a researcher for two years. "I came home when the war broke out." Because of his trade, he was exempt from war duty. Instead, he sent to an explo sives plant in Nobel near Parry Sound. The Winnetts remained there six years. "We thought we were city people until we got to Nobel," reflects Isobel, adding Oakville was similar when the couple first arrived here in 1946. "We couldn't return to the city until after the war ended," she continued. "And, once we got back, we looked for a nice small town, and guest what, this is it," she said, referring to Oakville. George joined Campbell's Foods as a quality control inspector, and remained there 26-1/2 years, until he could exercise his option for early retirement. During the 1960s, he was transferred to Portage La Prairie, Man. "It was sup posed to be for only two years, but it stretched into 41/2 years," said Isobel, adding she remained in Oakville. The couple, who have become well known locally for their volunteer work and dedication to the community, brought a house on Lawson Street. They moved to Bronte about 12 years ago. "We lived across the street from where Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital was being built," said Isobel. At about the same time, she joined what was known until recent years as the Oakville University NEWS & SPORTS Women's Club, and remains a charter members of the 50year-old organization now known as the Canadian Federation of University Women - CFUW-Oakville. She had studied modem lan guages at the University of Toronto's University Collge. George got involved with: the Lions Club, first in Parry Sound, and then Oakville. H e's been a Lion for 59 years. Today's he an Honourary Member. "I rolled coins for three years," he smiles, "then I pawned it off on the presi dent. But, w e're still rolling coins."
