Wednesday, November 15, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D5 Memorable trip to Molson Centre The Oakville Rangers atom-A rep team had the experience of a lifetime earlier this month when they travelled to Montreal for a couple of exhibition games against an AA team from Dorval, called the West Island Royals. The first game was played Friday night in Dorval and Oakville was caught with weary legs, losing 6-3. Scoring goals for Oakville were Patrick Christie, Spencer Jenkin and Brett Runciman. Assists went to Patrick Channing, Christie, Kurt Deschner, Daniel Desjardins, Anthony Farrow and Adam Kubacki. The Saturday game, though, was the highlight, being played at the Molson Centre, home of the Montreal Canadians. Both teams were treated like professional teams with their names announced and posted up on the scoreboard. They then stood at the blue line for the playing of the national anthem followed by the opening face-off. The game was videotaped and a copy will be given to each player as a souvenir. Those players fortu nate enough to score were given the pucks as momentos. Befitting the auspicious loca tion, the game was a very exciting one, ending in a 4-4 tie, even after a two-player shoot-out. Patrick Channing was the hero, scoring the equalizer with just three seconds left and the goalie pulled. Other scorers were Matt Downer, Taylor Hodgkinson and Harry Hristopoulos. Adding assists were Channing, Joey Cicchini, Downer, Jamie McKeown and Brett Runciman. Daniel Dalby and Garret Mott shared the goaltending duties with both goalies each stoning a Dorval player in the shoot-out. Goaltenders ruled during the shootout with both Adam Kubacki and Jamie McKeown unable to score. After the game, both teams watched the New York Rangers practice and received autographs from many of the Ranger and Canadian players. They then went to the Saturday night game (which the Rangers won 5-2). The parents and players thoroughly enjoyed the trip and thank the coaches and team man ager for making all the arrange ments. REGULAR SEASON Making the adjustment from the Forum to Fergus for a regular league game two nights later proved difficult, however, as they went down to a dreadful 8-3 defeat. Oakville could only score on one of five power play opportunities and actually gave up a shorthanded goal. Scoring goals were Patrick Channing, Patrick Christie and Matt Downer. Assists went to Taylor Hodgkinson (2), Joey Cicchini, Anthony Farrow, Harry Hristopoulos and Jamie McKeown. Oakville had an exciting finish to · their 5-5 tie with visiting Hespeler on Nov. 8. Hespeler went ahead 5-4 with 44 seconds remain ing. Oakville then pulled their goalie and scored with 10 seconds remaining to tie it at 5-5. Goals were scored by Patrick Channing (2), Patrick Christie (2) and Taylor Hodgkinson. Assists went to Jamie McKeown (2), Brett Runciman (2), Channing, Joey Cicchini, Daniel Desjardins, Anthony Farrow and Adam Kubacki. On Nov. 12, Oakville got back on the winning track in a big way with a 4-0 shutout over host Erin/Hillsburgh. Garret Mott earned the shutout, stopping 15 shots. Matt Downer led the offence with a goal and two assists. Other goals were scored by Joey Cicchini, Taylor Hodgkinson and Spencer Jenkin. After a slow start, losing two of their first three games, these Rangers have put it all behind them and put it all together to go on a tear, defeating every team in the league, in order. They are now tied for first place overall with arch rival Burlington Eagles. First to fall was Woolwich by the score 8-0, next was Dundas 4-1 followed by Brampton who went down to the visiting Rangers by the score 8-2. Brampton lost again when they visited Oakville a few days later 5-1. A trip to play Woolwich produced the fifth win 5-2. In recent action, the next to fall were the Burlington Eagles after a hard fought game. This game fea tured the distribution of 14 penal ties in a 4-3 Oakville win. In what was a very physical game Oakville goals were provided by Gabriel D'Rollo, Michael Salvatore, Michael Baird and Shane Wilton. Assists went to D'Rollo, Patrick Irish, Jeffery Patterson, Calvin Reynolds and Matthew Lynett. The next night Oakville beat Hespeler in their arena 3-0. After a scoreless first period Jeffrey Patterson opened things up with his goal, assisted by Hollis Milroy. Darren Quan scored twice in the third, the first one assisted by Michael Salvatore and the second goal on a solo effort. The final win in this streak was at home facing a more inspired Hespeler team. Regardless, Oakville came away with a 5 -3 win. Shane Wilton led the offence with a pair of goals with single markers to Patrick Irish, Steve McDonald and Michael Salvatore. Assists went to Jeffrey Peel (2), Irish, Michael Baird, Darren Quan and defencemen Steven McDonald and Glen MacDonald. In what has quickly become their style these Oakville boys score frequently while keeping the puck out of their own net. During this win streak these minor atom A Rangers have outscored their opponents 42 - 12. Strong goal tending has been consistently pro vided by Grayson Douglas and Kevin Campbell. Memorable games included the Rebels 1-0 victory over the Oakville Twisters in the semifinals of the Vaughan tournament, the difference being Sara Shannon's goal midway O A K V IL L E through the sec ond half.
