Wednesdsay November 15, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D7 Business Software allows firms to make informed decisions (Continued from page D8) Pringle. "Often we see dollars going out here and there, with the company treating it almost like lost money. We want our corporate clients to look at what they're doing as an investment in the community." To that end, GrantStream works with clients to determine what their needs and goals are and how they can create meaningful partnerships with the not-for-profit sector. "It doesn't always come down to dollars," says Pringle. "In some cases, there are opportunities for teamwork in other areas, such as pledging volunteer hours or donating excess equipment.." Once a strategy has been mapped out, GrantStream creates an on-line application form which all not-forprc^it groups use to subm it their requests. The data gets entered by the applicant and then screened by GrantStream based on the corporate client's areas of interest. "If someone applies who doesn't meet our client's criteria, our software screens them out and sends out a reply on the com pany's behalf," explains Pringle. "The ones who m ake it through the initial screening get checked and analyzed by our staff who then pass the recommendations on to the client." In addition to eliminating headaches and paperwork for corporate clients, Pringle says GrantStream also offers benefits to the not-for-profit sector by levelling the playing field. With every one filling out the same application form, the little guy with the low profile is on equal footing with the larger, bet ter-funded organizations that have the means to make a glitzy presentation. All decisions can be based strictly on the merit of the individual proposal. Pringle says his newly-launched company has received fantastic response from both the corporate and the not-for-profit sectors. Anyone wishing further informa tion about GrantStream and the ser vices it offers should call (416) 6327820 or fax. (416) 632-7830. Maximize RRSPs and take government gift R R SPs are the prim e savings vehicle for m ost Canadians. It is not the investm ents that you own in your RRSP, but the tax advan tages that provide a substantial part o f your gains. Many investors focus on the specific investm ents they hold and not the tax planning advantages o f a RRSP. C onsider two investing options. Assum e that you are in a 50% tax bracket and invest $5,000 per year for 30 years at an annual return of 10%. If the m oney were invested taxfree inside a RRSP, the value after 30 years w ould be approxim ately $850,000. However, if the investm ent were taxable year-by-year and you sold part o f it each year to pay the taxes, PETER WATSON Dollars & Sense the value would be worth approxi mately 40% o f the $850,000 RRSP or about $350,000. The obvious conclusion from this exam ple is to invest within your RRSP and enjoy the tax-free com pounding. There are other tax considerations not mentioned in the above example. They include the immediate tax sav ings for the RRSP contributions as they are made. Furtherm ore, investing in a RRSP also gives you the opportunity to defer taxes for many decades and use these deferred taxes, interest free, to add to your retirem ent nest egg. Now that we have done the math, consider the im plications in your ability to retire comfortably. Three main advantages to investing within an RR SP as opposed to regular investing that will affect your retire ment are: First, you can allow the tax advan tages to build your portfolio faster and enjoy a higher standard o f living during retirement. The above exam ple showed how the same invest ments would provide either $350,000 or $850,000. Second, you could retire early. The taxable investm ent took 30 years to reach a value o f $350,000, howev er, it took ju st over 20 years to reach that figure within a RRSP. And, finally, the third advantage is y o u 'co u ld reach the same value within a RRSP by saving less. E veryone know s we live in a heavily taxed country so make sure to use every tax break available to you. M aximize one o f the few gifts from the governm ent -- maximize your RRSP.
