Now that the Burlington resident has been re-elected as regional chair, she says it's time to forge ahead in new directions in the areas of pressing concern, most notably economic trade and transporta tion. Savoline, 55, was returned to office to begin her seventh year, and third term, as chair after a comfortable but, to some political pundits, surprisingly modest majority in the popular vote. The returning chair garnered 40,131 votes across the region out of 65,676 cast in the first vote for the position. That translated to 61 % in her favour compared to 14,375 (22%) votes cast for Anne Marsden and the 11,170 for first-time candidate Lisa Cooper (17%). All three candidates for regional chair are Burlington residents. Savoline, a Burlington city councillor for 12 straight years prior to her elevation to the regional chair in 1994, offered no comment about her opponents. The chair's position pays a salary of $74,734, as of January 2000, one-third of it tax free. partnership involving Halton that will emphasize trade links and improved and expanded transportation routes. She said more details would be forth coming, but noted Halton is joining forces with Hamilton-Wentworth and Niagara regions in an association called the Bi-National Trade Alliance. The three southern Ontario regions will link up with government and busi ness officials in the upstate New York counties of Erie, Monroe and Niagara. "We are going to create an economic region and a force to be reckoned with," said Savoline. "It will be more of a formal/informal arrangement." Members of the Canadian contingent have committed $50,000 each initially, with word of American interest and Ontario government involvement to be announced soon, she said. The regional chair said Halton must maintain and improve ties with the other Greater Toronto Area communities, but that it can't put blinkers on the future. "We sit on the Greater Toronto Services Board (dealing with transporta tion issues like GO Transit), but we're not going to convince anybody with just eight votes out of 110," said Savoline. `There are no borders anymore; we are not isolated or insular. As for her pre-election goals, Savoline said she did not have specific voter percentage expectations in mind and did not view the relatively low 51% support she received in Oakville, home of the regional headquarters, as a nega tive comment about her or council. "I'm not a bit disappointed.... I have a clear mandate," she said of the results. "I didn't know what to expect because this is the first time for the (chair) vote. "We deliver the kind of service (water, garbage, recycling, etc.) that is done quietly, but this (vote) has put us in front of the people and three years from now we'll know what they think of the job we've done. "I'm so glad we went this route as a council," she said of the decision to make the regional chair's job an elected posi tion, rather than the appointed post it used to be. According to Halton Regional Police, at 1 a.m. S g t Jeff Siemon checked a GMC Sierra parked at the Holiday Inn on Argus Road and found a man sleeping inside. A computer check revealed that the pickup was reported stolen to York Regional Police on OcL 16th. After the man was arrested without incident, police learned the man was the subject of a Canada-wide warrant for parole violation.
