Looking to start the Major Se ries Lacrosse season with backto-back wins, the Rock got a goal from Dan Lomas with just 41 seconds to play to tie the game and send it to overtime. Rock goalie Steve Fryer made 11 saves in overtime before the Lakers' Jeff Swift netted the winner at the 4:14 mark. The Rock trailed 8-3 midway through the second period un til Brett Hickey scored a pair of power-play goals to cut the lead to three. Lomas added another power-play goal to make it 8-6 and Brandon Slade trimmed the French and Stephan Leblanc each had three assists. Fryer stopped 48 shots for Oakville. The team did just that, winning a national bronze medal in Saskatoon, Sask., in the top rated Division 1, Tier 1 tournament. Lakeside defeated Edmonton FOG 2-1 in the bronze-medal match, winning two straight sets after losing the first set 29-27. Lakeside went 5-1 in the first two days of competition, qualifying for semifinal play after defeating Manitoba in the quarter-finals. The bronze-medal win came soon after a dis appointing 2-1 semifinal loss to provincial rival Pakmen from Mississauga. B.C. Force won the gold medal over Pakmen. "It is satisfying to know that the only two loss es (in nine matches) were to the two teams that finished ahead of us in the tournament," said Lakeside head coach Howie Grossinger. Oakville's Bennett Swan, Lakeside's talented middle hitter, was named to the national tourna ment all-star team. Many of the Lakeside players will be moving on to university volleyball in the fall including Swan and Brady Fiddler, also of Oakville. Both attended the final Team Ontario selection camp at McMaster University in May. The roster has yet to be announced. Athletes selected will represent Ontario at the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg. Other members of the team include Deman Dulat, Garrett Markham, Ryan Tautrims, Thom as Da Silva, Zane Grossinger, Ryan Scott, Thom as Whitty, Julian Krygel, Gavin McCurdy, Adam Lu and Liam Irwin.
