M usic teacher receives award a t com petition A local m usic teacher recently had the spotlight turned on h im for a change. Brian Vincent, head o f m u sic at T.A. Blakelock High School, received the I. Keith M ann Award for O utstand ing Concert Band Director at Musicfest Nationals in N i agara Falls. The M ann, Alberta. Vincent joins a very select group o f high school music conductors who have re ceived this award, presented annually since 2 0 0 2 . In addition to his role as head o f m usic at Blakelock, Vincent also gives o f his time after school and in the eve nings to conduct the schools highly-regarded W in d En sem ble, w hich is considered to be am ong som e o f the strongest high school bands in Canada. Over the past 10 years at Blakelock, Vincent has con ducted his bands to multiple regional and national gold medals. Earlier this year, the Blakelock W in d Ensemble earned gold at the Ontario Band A s sociation in M arkham and Musicfest Regional C om pe tition in London, and platiaward a is presented educator, in honour o f the late Keith m usic conductor and clinician from num at the Great East Music Festival in Massachusetts. During Musicfest Nation als, the W in d Ensemble com peted for the hrst time at the 6 0 0 Level, the highest level o f difficulty in Canada, and earned silver. Three other Blakelock en sembles also com peted this year at Musicfest Nationals and they each earned gold in their respective divisions -- the Jazz Orchestra conducted by teacher A m y Abbott, and the student--led Saxophone Trio and Clarinet Quartet.
