For the second consecutive year, members of the Halton police, supported by Peel Regional Police and the Burlington Fire Department, kicked a ball around at the Oakville Soccer Club held in the name of community support. A total $1,100 was raised, with $800 given to Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House and $300 to the Oakville Soccer Club. Cheque presentations were then made to both organizations in May The fundraising event was launched to spon sor youths who can't afford to play soccer. In 2016, 32 participants raised $300. This year, players hit the turf with a bigger goal in mind -- any extra money raised would be donated to Oakville' s Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House, a cancer support centre. Officers and their teammates played for service members who are batding the illness. "We wanted to demonstrate our love and sup port for them," said Staff Sgt. Rob Floyd. "It was an opportunity to raise money for an organiza tion that has offered our own, and others, com fort and support." Halton police score for charities Halton Police Staff Sgt. Rob Lloyd, left, and Deputy Police Chief Nish Duriaiappah, right, as police donate $300 to David Harris of the Oakville Soccer Club. The round-robin tournament consisted of six co-ed teams, each playing five 30-minute games, with the top two teams battling head-to-head in the final. After two scoreless halves, the winner was determined by shootout. Oakville Soccer Club donated the fields and Halton Tolice Chief Stephen Tanner made an ap pearance. "We work with each other for so many hours in a job and that can be very stressful. Police of ficers have a very special bond. We're like family," said Lloyd.
