C om e F rom A w a y -- the Cana dian blockbuster musical that got its start at Sheridan College -- won a Tony Award Sunday for Best Direction of a Musical, which went to stage director Christopher Ashley. The Tony Awards were pre sented in New York City at the Radio City Musical Hall. C om e F rom A w a y had received a total of seven 2017 Tony Award nominations, including: Best Performance by an Ac tress in a Featured Role in a Mu sical -- Jenn Colella Best Book of a Musical -- Irene Sankoff and David Hein Best Original Score -- Music and/or Lyrics Written for the Theatre - Irene Sankoff and Da vid Hein Best Direction of a Musical -- Christopher Ashley Best Lighting Design of a Mu sical -- Howell Binkley Best Choreography -- Kelly Devine. Sheridan College's Oakville campus is home to the Canadian Music Theatre Project (CMTP), the incubator that first devel oped and produced C om e F rom musical about the selfless humanity and compassion shown by the people of Gander and five surround ing towns in welcoming 7,000 stranded passengers on 9/11. He promised that their work would be among the first to be incubated by the CMTP, and in 2012 the duo's script was brought to life by students in the Mu sic Theatre Performance program, culminating in a 45-minute staged reading of the show. "Only five Canadian musicals have made it to Broadway," said Rubinoff. "It is very special that our students played a sig nificant role in launching one of these musicals."
