A Shakespeare selfie win by Marta Marychuk Oakville Beaver Staff li Nelson, of Oakville, was one of two winners of the CBC 2017 Shakespeare Selhe youth writing challenge. Nelson, 15, is a student from Abbey Park High School. She w on the Grades 7 to 9 category with her submission That Something Wicked. "Written in the voice of the first witch from Macbeth, this is a powerful evocation of the bloodshed and grief unleashed during the Syrian civil war," said Kenneth Oppel, who was a contest judge and is a bestselling young adult author. Nelson received an iPad mini and Abbey Park High School library will receive 50 young adult books from a variety of publishers across Canada. More than 600 students from across the country sent in their modern-day monologues and soliloquies about news topics ranging from Pokemon GO to feminism, written in the voice of a Shakespearean character. Arya Cokic, also from Abbey Park, also finished in the top 10 of the contest in the Grades 7 to 9 category The girls' English teacher, Megan Welsh, taught her class how to write a soliloquy, made it into a class assignment, and had everyone submit their work to the contest. "It paid off, as the class produced some outstanding work," said Abbey Park Special Education Resource Teacher Paul Dick. Emma George, 16, was the other Shakespeare Selhe winner. George, who is in Grade 11 at Havergal College in Toronto, won the Grades 10 to 12 category with Naught Is Discernible Within This Place. Woiden, visited Oakville June 3. He was here to preside over 540 Golden Hawks Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron' s 65th annual Ceremonial Review, a formal parade where the unit displays the result of the year' s training. During the parade, the General awarded Cadet Warrant Officer Second Class (WO2) Louis Breithoupt the Lord Strathcona medal, the highest cadet medal that recognizes excellence in citizenship, cadet training and physical htness. Breithoupt, a student at T.A. Blakelock High School, credits the training and mentorship that he received from the Squadron for this award. "The Squadron has taught me to be a good citizen and to work with the community," said Breithoupt, who has also received the Royal Canadian Legion Medal of Excellence for his dedication to the community.
