The Co-operators Oakville Family Ribfest kicks off today (June 23) and runs throughout the weekend at the Trafalgar Road campus of Sheridan College, wrapping up Sunday (June 25). The fun-filled family festival is organized and hosted by the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar, with proceeds going to support community charities in Oakville. This year' s ribfest features nine well-known ribbing teams that will be competing for best ribs and best sauce: Silver Bullet; Kentucky Smokehouse; Tennessee Fatbacks; Billy Bones BBQ; Boss Hog' s; Brick Yard BBQ; The Crazy Canuck; The HogFather; and, Bad Wild BBQ. In honour of the country' s sesquicentennial anniversary, this year' s ribfest has a Canada 150 theme, with a special display of historic photos, Canadian flags (old and new) and a trivia challenge (with prizes). There will be an indigenous area with Metis elders telling stories, as well as beading demonstrations, dancing and singing. Soper Wildlife Rescue will have an educational area for children, in addition to performing two shows for children each day. There will also be a children' s area, that' s free, a marketplace with a wide array of food vendors, even food for vegetarians in the group. In addition to ribs, to wash down all those ribs, there will be four beer tents, also serving wine, and soft drinks. Ribfest will have plenty of live entertainment including classic rock; '50s and '60s music; a Caribbean jazz group; Canadian tribute artists; and, a Beatles tribute band. Sheridan Musical Theatre presents the opening ceremonies for Ribfest on Saturday at 6 p.m. On-site parking is available at Ribfest for $10 per vehicle. Free parking is available at nearby Town Hall, with shuttle buses, people movers (golf carts) and a horse-drawn wagon for the children. Oakville Transit also goes into the campus.
