The family moved to Fort Erie, Upper Canada in 1792 and set tled near Burlington Bay in what' s now Hamilton. The family moved to the Head-of-the-Lake on land adjoining Joseph Brant' s. The Chisholm brothers learned to speak the Mo hawk language. In May 1812, William married Re becca Silverthorn. In August 1812, he was fighting as an Ensign with the 2nd York Regiment, Militia, at the capture of De troit. Later he was awarded a General Service Medal for his service at Detroit. In Oct. 1812, he fought at Queenston Heights along with his father and broth ers, John and George Jr. Two months later he was promoted to lieutenant. In the Battle of Lundy' s Lane in 1814 he last saw action. W h en the war was over, Chisholm became a leading merchant in the village of Hannahsville (later named Nelson) at Guelph Line and Dundas Street. In 1820 he was elected to the House of Assembly representing Halton. He was also elected in 1830 and 1 8 3 6 -- but lost in 1 8 3 4 and 1841. He became postmas ter of the second post office on Dundas Street between the capital York (Toronto) and the Village of Dundas. He owned a shipyard on Burlington Bay and by 1827 owned five sailing vessels. He was appointed a com missioner for the construc- William Chisholm tion of the Burlington Bay Canal, and later, commis sioner of the Welland Canal. He also recognized the potential of the natural har bour at Sixteen Mile Creek. W h en the land came up for auction in 1 8 2 7 he won his bid. He founded the Vil lage of Oakville with his purchase of the 9 6 0 acres at the m outh of the Sixteen Mile Creek in 1827, a large land reserve formerly held for the Mississaugas. It is reported the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation called the trader in oak barrel staves `White Oak.' In 1827, Chisholm began building what would be com e Oakville. Piers were built, the har bour was cleared, and he put up a large water-pow ered mill on the east bank of Sixteen Mile Creek, at the end of what is now called Old Mill Road. He also built a warehouse to hold the produce prior to shipping. In 1828, Chisholm suc ceeded in having an act passed vesting in him the rights for the use of the har bour for 50 years.
