Chisholm began planning the town of Oakville and set up a shipyard and harbour. He was ap pointed justice of the peace in the Gore District in 1829. Oakville' s forests and harbour became the foundation for another industry that survives to this day - shipbuilding. The 200-ft. pines and 150-ft. oaks were squared with axes, loaded onto schooners, or made into rafts and sailed out of Oakville harbour for the St. Lawrence River. They were destined for England where they were prized for ship-masts. Chisholm owned the first tavern, sawmill and gristmill. He was appointed collector of customs and postmaster. The first brick building on site was erected around 1835, and the building served as a store house and possibly an early Custom House. The Custom House was later converted into the Chisholm family home now known as Erchless Estate, which would be home to six genera tions of the Chisholm family. Chisholm developed the harbour and invested heavily in shipping and shipbuilding however the investments would prove to sour. Despite his dreams and determination, Ch isholm declared bankruptcy in 1842, dying shortly after at the age of 54. He spent his final years in the family estate, living with his son, Robert Kerr. He is buried in Oakville St. Mary' s Cemetery. The little village was incorporated as the Town of Oakville in 1 8 5 7 -- 10 years before Canada would see Confederation make it a nation. -- with files from the Oakville Historical Society la w n yo u g ro w w e m o w · · · · LANDSCAPE DESIGN &MAiNTENANCE · Sprinklers · Weekly Property Maintenance · Spring & Fall cleanups Garden Design Stone Retaining Walls Interlock Sod Installation Serving O akville & Burlington Call today for a free consultation and estim ate ( 9 0 5 ) 4 6 7 - 1 5 0 7 · w w w .la w n b r o s .c a inside today's Beaver www.insideHALTON.com Holland Park Garden Real Estate City Parent Oakville Canada 150 Editorial Artscene 6 16 Sports Classified 17 19 *All flyers not necessarily delivered to all homes For home delivery & customer service call 905-631-6095, 5300 Harvester Rd., Burlington NEW SUBSORiFTiONS call 905-631-6095 or subscribe online @www.oakvillebeaver.com OAKVILLE * " V 1 2 5 Y E A R S IN O A K V IL L E JULY SPECIAL $ 1 5 o ff and fre e fa s t w a x w ith th is ad.
