Choir! and the Nathaniel Dett Chorale performed during Metro's Homegrown Tour -- a special celebration of Canada's 150th birthday at the John Bell Chapel at Appleby College on Wednesday, May 24. Oakville was one of six Ontario cities to host a local food and music experience in celebration of Canada's sesquicentennial anniversary. The cities were selected for the tour because they played an instrumental role in Canada's history. Oakville was selected because of its history as a key stop on the Underground Railroad, establishing itself as a welcoming community to African-Americans seeking freedom. The night began with a private dining experience, featuring a themed menu curated by Canadian culinary expert Mike Ward. The menu for the Oakville evening was soul food inspired. The free public concert followed. Approximately 500 people joined in both events -- that featured a walk-on performance from Canadian icon Black, who has been named as one of The 25 Greatest Canadian Singers Ever and dubbed Canada's Queen of R&B.
