"On Monday (May 22), even though the park (Coronation) was closed, there was a large num ber of people that were there, picnicking, believ ing that it was business as usual," said Glynn. "But, quite frankly, the parks are closed until further notice." Heavy rainfall in recent weeks has pushed Lake Ontario water levels to a record high - 1.77 metres above normal, surpassing the previous re cord set in 1952, according to Glynn. As of Wednesday, May 24, the water level was 75.86 metres, eight centimetres higher than the record high for this time of the year. And that total hadn't factored in yesterday' s (May 25) rainfall. The normal water level for Lake Ontario is 74.2 metres. "Lake Ontario's level remains the highest water levels ever recorded," said Glynn, who indicated record keeping began in 1918. He noted all of Oakville's Lake Ontario water front parks are closed now and for the near fu ture, due to the flooding. The higher-than-normal water levels have also resulted in the flooding of the Bronte and Oakville harbours and piers. "A number of the docks are underwater and the walkways leading up to the docks are under water, as well," said Glynn. "They would become very slippery, due to the algae on them, because they've been underwater for a number of weeks," advised the deputy fire chief. When water levels will recede and return to normal isn't known at this time, as it depends on how much rain falls in the near future, according to Glynn. "How much rain we have in the future will determine if the water levels in the lake will con tinue to go up or not," said Glynn. He cited a recent report from the International Lake Ontario - St. Lawrence River Board, which monitors and controls both bodies of water, in dicating levels in Lake Ontario are near or at the expected peak. However, the May 18 statement from the river control board, outlining higher Lake Ontario outflows, said it will take "several weeks to sig nificantly reduce levels and longer to return to more average water level conditions," due to the large volume of water in the lake. The board advised continued caution and pre paredness for sustained high water levels in the weeks to come. "It currently opened as many floodgates as possible and it has an outflow of water from Lake Ontario that hasn't been seen since 1998," said Glynn. "It is trying to control water levels by the maxi mum amount of outflow from Lake Ontario, but it has to be careful because the levels in the St. Lawrence would become unsafe for some of the ships to come in."
