23 More tickets and arrests this year on Road Safety Week by Tim Whitnell Metroland West Media |Thursday June 8, 2017 | O A K V IL L E B E A V E R |www.insidehalton.com Nearly 10 per cent more drivers were issued tickets and five more drivers than last year were arrested for impaired operation of a vehicle, in comparing Halton police statistics from the 2017 and 2016 Canada Road Safety Week traffic enforcement initiatives. From May 16-22 this year, uniform and plainclothes officers from Halton Regional Police supported the national safe-driving campaign. Officers conducted heightened traffic enforcement across the region focusing on the so-called `Big 3 Killers' on roadways -- aggressive driving, distracted driving and impaired operation of a vehicle by alcohol or drugs. During the recent seven days of enforcement, which ended with the Victoria Day holiday weekend, Halton police laid 2,082 Provincial Offence Notice charges. The ticket total represents a 9.4 per cent increase over the 2016 campaign, w hen 1,903 charges were laid. The top three charges for Canada Road Safety Week in Halton in 2017 were for speeding, followed by document infractions for licensing and insurance, and then disobeying stop signs. During the campaign, Halton police conducted a variety of enforcement, including Reduced Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE), to address the ongoing issue of people choosing to drive while impaired. Sgt. Ryan Snow of Halton police' s Traffic Services Unit said the scourge of the road in recent years, distracted driving, finished a close fourth statistically in terms of reasons for officers laying charges during the week in late May. "People are getting really good at hiding it (cellphone). It' s not good enough (in court for an officer) to say they (driver) were looking down or that you saw the glow of a light in their face. If you can't put it (an electronic device) in their hands, you can't lay the charge." I was eating the same things day a fte r day.
