For the past 10 years, Rumi operated a fine art gal lery in the Port Credit area of Mississauga. In April, he moved the gallery to its new location at 120 Kerr St. in Oakville, not far from where he lives. The gallery deals in museum quality post-war Cana dian, American and British art. Currently, the gallery has an exhibition of paintings by celebrated Canadian artist Rita Letendre, that will be on display for the month of June in the lead up to her retrospective exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Letendre is considered one of the most eminent living abstract artists. Her painting career began in Montreal in the 1950s when she was associated with Quebec's prominent abstract artist groups -- Les Automatistes and Les Plasticiens. The gallery's first exhibition in Oakville was Past Meets Present -- Post-War and Contemporary Art. Rumi's passion for fine art developed as a student of art history at the University of Victoria. He earned a Masters in Art Business Sotheby's Institute of Art in London, England. Rumi worked at Sotheby's until 2007 when he started his own fine art gallery. He travels overseas quite frequently in search of works for his clients as well as bringing Canadian works home. "It's definitely a passion," says Rumi. "Everyone has something that they love." For Rumi, what he enjoys the most is the hunt of finding art and recording its ownership as a guide to authenticity and quality, and then sharing that find with collectors and clients. "It's similar to a modern-day Indiana Jones", he says. film ca General $8.501Children & Seniors $6.501All seats Tues $5.00 SH0WTIMES FOR JUNE 9 - 1 5 NEWTHIS WEEK:THE MUMMY Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (G) The Mummy (14A) F ri: 1 1 :0 0 ,1 :3 0 ,4 :4 5 ,6 :4 5 .1 0 :1 0 S a t& S u n :1 2 :3 0 ,2 :4 0 ,4 :4 5 , 6 :4 5 ,1 0 :1 0 M o n :1 :3 0 ,4 :4 5 ,6 :4 5 ,1 0 :1 0 T u e :1 1 :0 0 ,1 :3 0 ,4 :4 5 ,6 :4 5 ,1 0 :1 0 W e d :1 :3 0 ,4 :4 5 ,1 0 :1 0 T h u :1 :3 0 ,4 :4 5 ,6 :4 5 ,1 0 :1 0 Everything, Everything (PG) F ri: 1 0 :5 0 ,1 :1 5 ,3 :4 5 ,7 :3 0 ,1 0 :0 0 S a t-M o n :1 :1 5 ,3 :4 5 ,7 :3 0 ,1 0 :0 0 T u e :1 0 :5 0 ,1 :1 5 ,3 :4 5 ,7 :3 0 ,1 0 :0 0 W e d -T h u :1 :1 5 ,3 :4 5 ,7 :3 0 ,1 0 :0 0 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (PG) Joseph Rumi moved his Mississauga gallery to Kerr Street in Oakville in April. |Riziero Vertolli/Metroland In addition to being a member of the board of directors for the Art Dealers Association of Canada, Rumi is a former Executive Member of the Board of Directors for Oakville Galleries and is the Founder and Chair of the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital Art Council for Halton Healthcare.
