Oakville golfer John Burghardt has committed to Francis Marion University Burghardt was one of three golfers announced as part of the South Carolina school' s recruiting class. The Patriots compete in Di vision I as an independent school. The Loyola high school grad post ed two victories in 2016. He won the Investors Group Junior Boys Quali fier, shooting an even-par 72 to win by three strokes, and also won the Canadian Junior Golf Association Humber College PBM Invitational. Burghardt placed 13th at the Investors Group Ontario Junior Boys Championship, where he bounced back from an opening 78 to post three straight under-par rounds (6 9 , 70, 71) to finish even for the tournament. He also placed sixth in the junior boys' division at the American Junior Golf Association Fore Performance. "Burghardt comes in as a ma ture freshman having taken a year off after his high school gradua tion," said Francis Marion Patriots coach Mark Gaynor. "I feel that in him we have found a hidden gem. He fell in love with the university after visiting from Canada." Burghardt represented the Cana dian Junior Golf Association in the 2 0 1 4 North America Cup where he scored the clinching points as Canada ended the U.S. team' s sev en-year hold on the trophy. (left) and Tim Bates - OJHL Images Misley, Kellenberger could be first OJHL teammates chosen in same year since 2013 By Jamie Neugebauer Special to the Oakville Beaver Oakville Blades' Bryce Misley and Matthew Kellenberger may become the first Ontario Junior Hockey League teammates to be taken in the same National Hockey League draft in four years. It' s only happened twice since the league was formed in its cur rent state in 2 0 0 8 , the latest being in 2 0 1 3 when two St. Michael' s Buzzers players were chosen. Blades' all-star defenceman Pat rick Kudla was taken in the sixth round by the Arizona Coyotes last year, so these are heady days for head coach Mike Tarantino' s team. "I think it'll be very nice for our organization and our league," said the Oakville native, who will begin his fourth season behind the bench in 2 0 1 7 -1 8 . "I'm n ot at all surprised about the attention those two guys have received," Tarantino said. "Off the ice, they are extrem ely m oti vated, their w ork ethics are sec ond to none, and they act like professionals despite their youth. On the ice, they are both starting to grow into themselves. They are both going to put on m ore weight, have huge hockey intel ligence, and both can think the game at high speeds. "For an NHL team, they have lots of time to develop because of their decisions to go the college route, and they project very well at the professional level." Misley, a centre who turns 18 in September, is a speedster at sixfoot-two, 190 pounds. He possess es an accurate wrist shot and last season dominated the league in the faceoff dot. The Don Mills Flyers product was selected in the sixth round by Peterborough in the Ontario Hock ey League draft in 2 0 1 5 , but the Calgary native had his sights set on American college hockey early on in his career. He has committed to play at the University of Vermont this fall. "I think the big decision maker for me was that you get more years of development out of the college game," said Misley. "You get to play against men up to 25 years old, so I think time was a big weighing factor for me. I also knew that if I played in the OHL right away I would not be one of the superstars off the start, so play ing Jr. A for a couple of years, with an incredible organization like the Oakville Blades, then going off to college, was absolutely the right decision for m e."
