The only true classical ballet school in Oakville, they have been part of this community for over 40 years now. Perfection and achievement in bal let are the goals of this prestigious school, goals of its founder Elizabeth Paterson, who opened The Oakville School of Dancing in 1960. The Artistic Director and Ballet principal of the School is currently Paterson's daughter, Amanda Anderson, a graduate of the National Ballet School. With her mother's determination, and her own expertise, she continues an Oakville tradition of excellence in dance training. "I feel honoured and privileged to be part of a gifted staff of colleagues who share my enthusiasm for devel oping and promoting the young artists of tomorrow," says Anderson, as she chats about her fellow teachers' expe rience and professional backgrounds. The newest member of school's teaching staff is Dean Vollick, a grad uate of the National Ballet School, who comes to them from the Desrosiers Dance Theatre from Toronto. Vollick is an esteemed new member of the family who brings with him valuable experience both as Dancers prepare for The Nutcracker. a teacher and as an ex-professional dancer, ready and willing to share his experiences with eager young stu dents. As part of the community for over four decades, The Oakville School of Dancing offers students young and old, new and seasoned dancers alike a stable learning environment with a sense of camaraderie. While they offer recreational dance classes as well as professional curriculum, all students receive the same expert training from certified teachers. Students that wish to per form and compete can audition for the School's Oakville Ballet Company, who performs several times annually, including the Christmas classic The Nutcracker. Currently, The Oakville Ballet Company and the Oakville Symphony (a partnership that began years ago) are excitedly preparing for this year's performance of The Nutcracker, coming to the stage at The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts on December 7 10th. This top quality production is comparable to professional theatre shows, appealing to the whole com munity, young and old. The cast of dancers performing The Nutcracker is comprised of tal ented dancers of the Oakville School of Dancing. Dancing the lead role of Sugar Plum Fairy this year are Mary Podgorski (17), Danielle Denichaud (16), and Jackie Smith (16). Due to the high calibre of training and dedication, these young ladies were fortunate enough to be accepted and danced this summer at Les Grandes Ballets Canadiens in Montreal, The Royal Academy of Dancing in England, and the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington D.C. respectively. With exceptional talent like this, and under the expert direction of Amanda Anderson, The Nutcracker is sure to exceed expectations in this Oakville tradition.
