Wednesdsay November 29, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A5 A m ity h o p es v id e o c a m e ra w ill stop dum ping The dumping of garbage at the Goodwill Value Centre located at 407A Speers Road in Oakville has forced Goodwill, The Amity Group, to monitor the location with video cameras in order to deter unlawful dumping and charge violators of the Oakville no dumping by law. Store manager, Jayne Billion, is shocked at the volume of debris and garbage that is being dumped nightly at the location. "Everyday, staff spends valuable time cleaning up unwanted items around our deposit box which must then be taken to the dump. The costs of transporting this unwanted garbage to the land fill site hurts our agency." People have dropped off unwanted garden clippings, building debris, broken and tom furniture, as well as garbage. As a result, Goodwill will closely monitor the site and prosecute anyone violating the no dumping by-law, says vice-president of marketing and partner ship development, Barry Coe. "It amazes me how inconsiderate a few people can be. Most of our donors are considerate and generous, giving us only items that are in excellent condition. In order to stop the few violators, charges will be laid against anyone dumping items at our store or donation box. Our video cameras enable us to monitor the site 24 hours a day. We have had success in the past in catching garbage dumpers, who have been charged and then fined. We will also bill the violators for the cost of the clean-up and the tipping fees that we incur in taking the garbage to the landfill site." Goodwill, The Amity Group, is a non profit agency that provides job training programs for people with disabilities and other employment barriers. Quality used goods are donated by the public which are then sold in Goodwill Value Centre stores. The revenue from the stores help to provide funding for job-training pro grams. The Alliance, along with its forerun ner the Reform Party, has also been successful in forcing the Liberals to adopt tax and debt cutting strategies, said Ferrone. "We've accomplished a lot," he added. Also on hand at the Holiday Inn gathering was Craig Chandler, who heads the group responsible for erect ing the "Show us the money, Jane," signs across the riding last week. The signs were intended to highlight the fact that Brown served as parlia mentary secretary to Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources and Development Canada, whose depart ment has been accused of irresponsible spending. Chandler, who ran unsuccessfully as a Reform Party candidate in 1993, groaned as he saw the right wing split in the vote across the province. "If Joe Clark wants to show he loves his country, he needs to step aside," said Chandler. "I think this election is the last fight." As subdued Alliance supporters filed out of the hotel shortly after the Liberal majority government was announced, many urged Ferrone not to give up the fight. And the popular athlete-tumed-businessman shook hands, hugged volun teers and promised it isn't over. "Hey, wait til next time," he said. 1840 Lakesbore Road W. - Mississauga (905) 855-7565 w v w . /la tfo n J a rrc A co m Chris Silverthorne - Funeral Director Thank you Oakville for selecting us best cruise agency Great customer service and excellent value such as our Alaska 2001 program, with Princess Cruises, featuring cruises from Cdn. * $ 1 1 9 9 p.p., cruise tours from Cdn. * $ 2 6 4 9 p.p. have made us a favourite with our customers. U.S.-style campaign didn't work said Brown (Continued from page A1) to take responsibility," said Brown. "If you want to be a leader, you have to take responsibility." When told by a campaign worker that Ferrone was coming over to concede victory to her, Brown retorted, "I hope he's coming over to apologize." Ferrone eventually conceded to her outside the banquet hall doors in a short ceremony. In comparison, both Byers and Lambert were wel comed into the hall. Lambert was greeted by applause when he was introduced. In introducing Brown for her vic tory speech, her campaign co-chair lawyer Jarvis Sheridan also referred to the personal attacks waged by the Alliance. "We responded by talking issues," he said. "We ran a good clean cam paign." Brown also thanked her supporters for running a clean campaign. "I want to thank my team for not stooping to conquer, but rather rid ing high to conquer." In the end, Brown said the nega tive A m erican-style cam paign failed to win over Oakville voters. She described Oakville as a welleducated, affluent community with a high degree o f volunteerism , "which indicates a social con science beats in the hearts of Oakvillians." She told her supporters that Oakville residents w eren't ready to follow the right-wing path and hand over power to the market forces. "The Liberal Party believes gov ernment must be an active force, a force for equality of opportunity for all Canadians. A force that does not bow down to the market as a God." Brown said the Alliance failed to make a breakthrough in Ontario. "Those who thought the right was united will have to think twice," she told supporters. "I think the Alliance will have to take stock in Stock." Brown applauded Prime M inister Jean C hretien for his political insight in calling an election that lead to a third successive Liberal majority government. "Everybody said this was not a good time to call an election, but he told us in caucus that it would be a good tim e to set the Canadian Alliance with its negative message back on its heels and he said we could reduce the number of sepa- ratists in parliament." She also thank Finance Minister Paul martin for making a campaign stop during the election, and health M inister Allan Rock for attending a private fundraisng function. As for the future of the Liberal P arty's leadership and her own future in the Chretien-led govern ment, Brown refused to speculate. "Let's put it this way, I have enjoyed each task he has given me and I will enjoy any task he gives me." P R IN C E SS C R U ISE S ` Includes free air from Vancouver to Anchorage. "He put up a good show." Halton's MP credited a stable and credible platform with delivering his party back into power -- noting that, by contrast the Alliance was "consis tently inconsistent" on a number of major issues, including health care. `They (Alliance) were never togeth er," he said. Looking ahead to his next term, Reed said making progress in the field of renewable energy was at the top of his to-do list. He exhibited mild disgust when quoting from medical research figures which state poor air quality can be attributed to 2,000 deaths in Canada each year. `This is a golden opportunity to really start attacking pollution," he said. But for the most part last night, the Halton MP was simply breathing a sigh of relief -- one that he said wouldn't completely kick in until long after all the numbers were tabulated. `This will probably set in by 2 a.m. when I go to bed."
