B6 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, December 6, 2000 tfU o f (§ ntefvtam rrm vt ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Award-winning film tonight The Oakville Arts Council's Film Festival will continue at 7 p.m. today (Wednesday) with Dancer in the Dark at Famous Players Cinema in Town Centre I at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. This film won Best Picture and Best Actress at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival and tells the story of Selma (played by pop singer Bjork) who is a Czech immigrant and single mother working in a factory in rural America. Her salvation is her passion for music, specifically, the all-singing, all-dancing num bers found in classical Holly wood musicals. Selma is losing her eyesight, and her son stands to suffer the same fate if she can't put away enough money to secure him an operation. W hen a desperate neighbour falsely accuses Selma of stealing his savings, the drama of her life escalates to a tragic finale. With compassionate support ing performances by Catherine Deneuve, Joel Grey, and Peter Stomare, Dancer in the Dark pushes all the limits of modem film-making. Tickets are $8, $6 for mem bers, at the door. tfuA (fya A iu M e, Wervfo& d^feaAon /^ J T ie a tA e ^ A a d o n e A Fantasy land studio puts children at ease (Continued from page B7) tography business, which she calls As It Happens, Nielsen says she accomplishes that by trying to help the couple relax and leam to share special gifts or relationships with her, so she can incorporate them into a photographic keepsake. She also likes to take their engagement portrait so she can gauge how the bride- and groom-to-be relate to one another and to the picture-tak ing process. As for her "new-found passion" - work ing with children - she tries to do the same thing, but with children she uses different tactics to put them at ease. Nielsen builds sets and sews costumes to create a special ambience for her young subjects - a forest and castle for elves, fairies and Peter Pans, a brook and bridge for tomboys and Huckleberry Finns, and she's working on a mermaid set. But she also lets the children add things such as butterflies and small animals to the set or butterflies and flowers to their costume, which she creates, "so that they are part of the process." Not only does Nielsen portray the chil dren in a fantasy setting, complete with make-up and "fairy dust," she manipulates the photograph on a computer to give it a surreal appearance - perhaps a mist around the castle, or a wispy look to the hair or costume. "I don't touch the details on their faces, hands and toes. I want to make the image look fairy-like, fantasy-like. But you can still connect with that image," she explains. But the rest is like a fanta sy ... We call it the fairy technique - fairyizing." With family photos, Nielsen will take pictures o f the whole family - colour or black-and-white - on the set o f their choice. The black-and-white can be made into sepia if desired. Then she will take some of just the mom and dad and others of just the kids - together and individually. However, she says, no two photos are alike. "I don't want anybody to come in and say, `I want a picture exactly like that one.' That's not a possibility," she says. "1 want to do something that's a little bit custom-made for everyone. Nobody's ever going to look at somebody else's picture and say, `We did that one with my daughter.'" Nielsen's enthusiasm is apparent when she talks about her photographs, which line the walls o f her basement studio and fill albums that she is more than willing to share with anyone who asks.
