Oakville Museum' s provincial grant cut by $1,510 this year By Carol Baldwin ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR O akville MuseunT recently received a $35,341 operating grant from the Ministry o f Citizenship, Culture and Recreation. That's $1,510 less than last y e a r's grant, said Irene Knight, manager/curator of the Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate. Since the year 2000 is coming to an end, she said the reduction will not affect this year's budget, but the funding cut will have to be taken into consideration when the 2001 budget is developed. "We're certainly pleased that the province continues to provide this kind of funding to support the museum's operation because it Cer tainly provides central help in supporting a community museum like this," she added. "We work very hard to always ensure that we make all'th e standards (that the province sets for its grants), and w e're certainly pleased that the province has recognized that with this continuing grant." The money, she explained, pays for such things as salaries and benefits, supplies, resources, preservation of the museum's collec tion, public tours, school tours, special educa tion programs, building maintenance, and exhi bitions. Each year, the Town of Oakville submits a grant application, drawn up by Knight, outlin ing all the above expenses along with other sources of revenue - municipal and federal funding as well as fees charged for museum admission, memberships, special events, work shops and rental of the facility. "Really none o f our operating dollars is spent on acquisitions," Knight added. "The Friends of the Museum and our museum volun teers raise money through craft sales and vari ous other activities...And it's those monies that we use to actually acquire objects as we contin ue to furnish the Erchless family home." The provincial government has committed $2.7 million to nearly 200 community muse ums this year in the form o f operating grants. "Our community's historic character is one of the things that contributes to Oakville's attractiveness and charm. The Oakville Muse um and its dedicated heritage workers have set new standards of excellence in preserving that character for us and all citizens of Ontario," said Oakville MPP Gary Carr. "1 want to take this opportunity to congratu late the Oakville Museum for all its hard work in this respect, hard work that has now been gratefully acknowledged by the government and the people of Ontario." The exclusive authentic dishes originate from the Chi nese province of Szechuan, as well as some authentic Can tonese dishes. Brothers Steve and Boris Tam opened up their business in 1985, to overwhelming success in both Burlington and Oakville. Success in Oakville is evident as even though the options are plentiful throughout town, Oakvillians voted First Choice Kitchen as their first choice for Chinese food in the 1999 Readers' Restaurant Review. Samples from the Szechuan portion of the menu include various vegetable and meat dishes in the chef's own sauce. Many of these dishes are exclusive to First Choice Kitchen as they are family recipes, and not found anywhere else. Kung Po Gai Ding is a spicy mix of water chestnuts, chick en strips, peanuts and greens. The hot and sour soup is a must, made with authentic style brimming with chicken, pork and shrimp, along with tofu chunks, bamboo shoots and egg drop, all combined in a chicken-based broth laced with a healthy dose of Boris Tam's own hot sauce. If there are simply too many dishes to try, get a sample of every thing at their All-U-Can-Eat Dinner Buffet Special! Only $7.99 from Monday to Thursday. Another aspect of First Choice Kitchen that is sure to leave a good taste in your mouth, is their firm belief in giving some thing back to the community. In addition to the number of dif ferent charities they are proud to support, they also support The Rotary Club of Oakville. Last year they participated in A Taste of the Town, held in June at Appleby College, with var ious other local restaurants. This Rotary Club event raised money for the John Black Life Support Room at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (O.T.M.H.). Also, on the first official day they opened in Oakville back in 1985, they donat ed all of their receipts from first day of business to O.T.M.H. You could say the key to their success is hidden in com munity involvement and family secrets, that is, family recipes that produce the finest Chinese food in Oakville! To fully appreciate the savoury, zesty dishes and atmos phere, First Choice Kitchen is an experience that ought to be tried in person.
