On one hand, Grade 3 and 6 students from both the Halton District School Board (HDSB) and the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) scored above the provincial average in reading, writing and m athem atics tests. On the other hand, HDSB Superintendent o f School Programs Kit Rankin m aintains that the data will be used to improve student achievement over time. "This teacher learning, in turn, has a positive impact on student learning." The tests were conducted in May by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). A total o f 1,742 Grade 3 students and 1,627 Grade 6 students from the Catholic board's elementary schools participated in the testing. A total o f 3,099 Grade 3 stu dents and 3,043 Grade 6 students from the public board took part as well. According to HCDSB Superintendent of Education Diane Rabenda, the results "provide a snapshot o f a particular period in time." "It is very important not to over-interpret the EQAO school-by school test results, as variances do exist among schools across the Board," said Rabenda. Schools from both Boards plan to revise and im plem ent action plans based in part on their students' results. N ote: M ethod 2 does not include the students who were exempted from the tests.
