They will be up against the Brampton Battalion, Central Ontario Wolves (Lindsay), Kitchener Knights, Markham Islanders, Waterloo Warriors and the Wexford Raiders. The honour of opening the holiday tournament goes to the Oakville Rangers minor novice AA rep team when they lace up the skates against arch rival Burlington Wednesday morning, 8 a m., at Ice Sports Oakville. More than 100 games later, on Saturday, December 30, 5 p.m., at Oakville Arena, the final game will take place and the above noted Oakville Rangers minor bantam rep team -- along with every other team in their division, of course -- are hoping to be in it. River Oaks is serving as the tournament headquarters with action also at Ice Sports, Oakville Arena, Maplegrove and Glen Abbey. "We invite everybody to afford themselves the opportu nity to see the best in minor hockey, right here in Oakville," said the Minor Oaks Hockey Association (MOHA) tourna ment chairman Bob Woloschuk. "There's no admission charge." "There is a strong contingent from the GTHL, headed by the Toronto Young Nats, Mississauga, Etobicoke, Weston, West Mall, Humberview, the Young Canadians, the York Toros and Markham. "Other teams are from St. Catharines, Hamilton, Ancaster, Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph, Orangeville, Caledon, Barrie, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Lindsay, Peterborough and Lindsay. "Add in teams from Chicago, Pittsburgh, Amherst and Rochester, and we have a real international flavour to the tournament." An added feature to the tourney is the increasingly pop ular three-on-three competition, with all teams competing for honours. This takes place each day between noon-3 p.m. at Ice Sports Oakville. Th e y're not c ra z y ... they're just golfers When Christmas comes to an end, the giving just starts to begin for dozens of Oakville golfers who annual partic ipate in the Jim Freill Memorial Charity Boxing Day Golf Tournament at the Richview Golf and Country Club in Oakville. Each year these hearty golfers extend the holiday giv ing season by one more day, raising money for some needy charities. And it's all done in the name of fun. The event, which has raised more than $50,000 for causes in the GTA since its inception in 1994, is now named in honour of a man well known for his charitable work in Montreal. "At first, I thought the organizers were crazy to orga nize a tournament in the winter," said Brother David Lynch of the Good Shepherd Ministries, one of the tour nament's chief beneficiaries. "Once the event was up and running, I then had to question the sanity of the golfers. Now, I no longer question. "I just give thanks." The Good Shepherd Ministries operate centers in both Hamilton and Toronto, offering shelter, hot meals and a helping hand for the less fortunate of both cities. They also operate Barrett House, Toronto's first resi dence for people living with AIDS. This year, in addition to supporting the Good Shepherd's many efforts, a special tournament donation is also planned for the United Way of Oakville. "The uncertainty of the weather is just part of the fun for the tournament participants," explained tournament founder Peter Freill. "In 1994, the weather was perfect. In 1996, we played in a blizzard." It is not unusual to see Santa, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz or even a foursome of Vikings on the Richview course. Costumes are just one of the traditions practiced by several of the foursomes. Another, more recent tradition is the induction of wor thy participants into the Boxing Day Tournament Hall of Fame. Each year, a handful of benefactors are honoured for their dedication to the tournament. The enthusiasm generated by the tournament has shown in the growth of both the field and monies raised for charity. The first year the field was 60, then 90, then 124 ... In, this, its seventh year, 144 are expected to tee it up. Tournament organizers approach companies to donate goods and services for the charity auction and prize table. Last year's prize table was worth more than $10,000, and everyone received a prize. "Some people think we're crazy, but we have a lot of fun with this tournament," explained Freill. "But most important is that we manage to raise a lot of money for a lot of very worthwhile causes." For more information phone Peter Freill at (416) 5948492 or Steve Way land at (416) 868-8033.
