Tuesday, December 26, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D1 A Child's Christmas T he C h ristm as Problem I think it was in the 1800s, and it must have been a very sad time. It was a sad year because a lot of people from England came to Canada and when they settled it was just about Christmas time. They were really excited since they were going to be the first pioneers in Canada and probably going to get more presents than anyone else in Canada. They didn't know that back at the snowy white North Pole Santa was having technical difficulties. Santa knew that if there was a new land, each family has probably expanded and his tools still weren't good enough to make toys for hundreds more kids next Christmas. Santa knew he could n't really cancel Christmas but he might have no other choice. That evening the elves worked day and night knowing that Christmas was just around the comer. Day by day the elves worked harder than a teacher, engineer and scientist all put together. They almost gave up but they thought of all the children counting on them and kept going. Every single elf at the North Pole was helping but it still didn't seem to work because now it was six o'clock on Christmas Eve. They had six more hours to go. What will we do they all thought. "T-minus five hours until Christmas. Start packing toys," the announcer said. "All the kids probably put out their stockings and are waiting hopefully for us and we don't even have enough toys for them." Just then an elf ran in yelling, "The toy machine is broken down!" Santa said, "Okay, just put all the toys in the sleigh. We will just have to go with what we have." `T-minus 10 sec onds until take-off. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, l.,.O kay, go, go, go fast. We have about 7 hours until the kids wake up." Santa finished delivering toys everywhere except Cana da. They didn't have many toys left. Suddenly Santa got a call from the North Pole. They said, "Come back fast. An elf kicked the toy machine and it started going at super speed. It made about 10 sacks, no 20 sacks, no we can't count them all. You have about one hour to get back so go very very fast." Santa zoomed as fast as he could, not knowing what else could happen. He knew time was ticking, so he went faster. Finally he got back to the North Pole. All the elves were waiting for him and they threw every single sack there was. They counted about 100 sacks. Santa took off to Canada at full speed. When he got there he was too late. The kids were already awake. So Santa knew what he had to do. He came down and said, "Sorry about not getting here in time." He gave each of the pioneer children many presents and said, "Next year I promise not to be late." And from that year on, Santa always gets his elves to make toys all year round, so that there will be enough for everyone on Christmas Eve. Luke P. St. Matthew's School, Grade 4.
