The Halton public board has decided to close the five schools in order to reduce excess pupil space and qualify for provincial funding to build new schools in rapidly grow ing neighbourhoods in north Burlington and Oakville, and Georgetown and Milton. Police recruits have varied backgrounds A decorated Irish constable, a provin cial offenses officer and a biochemical researcher are among the latest recruits to join Halton Regional Police. Judge William Phipps led the new officers in the oath of office during Thursday's swearing-in ceremony at regional headquarters, where they were officially welcomed by Chief Ean Algar and other dignitaries. Among the recruits was Constable Lynn Gittens, the only officer among the group to be assigned to Oakville. Bom in Toronto, but raised in Newfoundland, Gittens enrolled in an immersion program before attending university that took her to the south of France for a year. There she was a parttime nanny while attending a local high school to develop her language skills. A graduate of the St. Lawrence College Police Foundations Program in Kingston, Gittens won the Foundation's Faculty Award for overall achievement. Robert Gourley joined the Royal Ulster Constabulary in 1993 and was sta tioned in Londonderry for five years. As part of the Evidence gathering Team, he investigated the Londonderry riots of 1997 and 1998. Gourley also served on divisional crime teams and received several com mendations for meritorious police work. Gourley, who is assigned to Burlington, made his home in Canada last year and now lives in Niagara Region with his wife Veronica. David Laus is a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces Naval Reserves, who last year completed a Law and Security Diploma at Humber College. He also has experience as a provincial offenses officer for the Metropolitan Toronto Housing Authority. Laus was also a supervisor in the Emergency Services Department at Bombardier Aerospace and is a certified instructor in everything from CPR to defensive tactics. Laus is assigned to Georgetown. A graduate of Pearson High School in Burlington. Krista Sherry earned her bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Huron College and is now completing her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Western Ontario. Before joining Halton Regional Police, Sherry was employed by the Canada Centre for Inland Waters, where she conducted biochemical research. Allison Theriault earned her Honours Degree in Sociology from the University of Guelph then graduated from the Police Foundations Program at Loyalist College. Theriault worked in the service indus try before joining Halton Regional Police and spent time volunteering with youth sports organizations and elderly recre ational services. She is assigned to Burlington. Deacon Berecz is an Honours gradu ate of RCC College of Technology in Vaughan as an electronic engineering technologist and was a teacher's aid for mathematics. Prior to joining Halton Regional Police, Berecz was a customer informa tion centre supervisor at Canon Canada in Mississauga. Berecz is assigned to Burlington. °0 < 2° ?
