D uring Question Period on the day of Minister M onsef's announcem ent, I asked the Parliam entary Secretary to the Minister of Status of W omen to update the H ouse on the actions the governm ent is taking to m iti gate gender-based violence. Unfortunately, the O pposition heckled so loudly that I w as unable to hear the response to m y question. The rules governing behaviour in the H ouse of C om m ons are clear -- m em bers m ust take responsibility for their conduct and are to show respect for one another and for different viewpoints. I rose on a point of order to call out this disrespectful behaviour and I am heartened by the response to m y intervention in the House. I have had m em bers of all parties thank me for speaking out on the issue. I also w ant to thank residents of Oakville and Burlington who have been supportive with their com m ents on m y Facebook post. It is my sincere hope that the spirit of co operation and collaboration that I see so of ten in m y com mittee w ork will find its way to Question Period. As M em bers of Parliam ent we can respect fully agree to disagree. Gender-based violence is a very serious is sue and it should be treated as such by ev eryone, especially those who represent C a nadians in the H ouse of Com m ons. And I trust we can agree an im portant non-partisan issue like gender-based vio lence is no laughing matter. -- Pam Dam off is Member of Parliament fo r Oakville North-Burlington.
