Vanessa M artinez Lagunas, cur rently the head coach of the w om en's soccer team at the University of M anitoba, has helped coach at OSC sum m er camps for three years and this week m arks the second straight sum m er she has run the club's fe male elite cam p for ADP and RDP players in the under-8 to U 1 6 age groups. Lagunas obtained her UEFA Pro License (the highest coaching certifi cation in the world) through the Ger m an Soccer Federation and is also a FIFA W omen's Soccer and Grassroots Instructor and UEFA Technical E x pert. During part of her playing career, Lagunas played with powerhouse FB Bayern Munich. OSC officials m et the former Mexi can national team player at a coach ing conference several years ago and arranged for her to become involved with the club. Long discus throw earns Thompson one of her three golds Caitlyn Thompson recorded the province's secondbest throw all-time for her age in winning the dis cus competition at a m eet at York University earlier this month. The 11-year-old Oakville Track and Field Club/ Athletiques International member hit the 19-m etre m ark to take the gold. Thom pson also recorded a pair of personal bests as she added two m ore gold medals at the meet. She w on the long ju m p w ith a leap of 4 .1 4 m and added another victory in the 8 0 0 m race walk w ith a time of four m inutes, 5 7 .1 6 sec onds. The three medals were among eight won by the club as its athletes prepare for the Minor Track Association Outdoor Championships later this month. Navayeh Nurse topped her previous bests in each of her events. She won the tyke girls' 150m in 2 4 .8 2 seconds and the nine-year-old added a bronze in the turbo javelin with a throw of 10.09 seconds. Sister Naomi Nurse picked up a silver medal in the senior girls' javelin with a throw of 14.07m and was fourth in the 150m with a run of 2 3 .0 6 sec onds.
