The nine-day journey took place in a restored 1972 GTO convertible, explained Robbins. "It was one of those bucket list things I wanted to do." Robbins and his daughters Ashley 28, and Sarah, 26, left Oakville on May 3. They drove through 11 states, beginning in Chicago, 111., before reaching Santa Monica Pier in Calif., and a few days rest at Taguna Beach. "It was like (the movie) Thelma and Louise but with a sidekick," said Robbins. Robbins has owned the GTO convertible since 1975, gradually restoring it over the years. He finally decided to "bite the bullet" and invested $25,000 in the car to make the cross-state journey. The trip took two years to plan, says Robbins, who is 61, and wanted to spend some special time with his two daughters before they started their own families. "We had a great time," he said. Everywhere we went, Robbins said they tried to get the flavour of the land -- eating and staying in local landmarks. "We stopped at all the attractions." O Some of the many places they stopped included Winslow, Ariz., (made famous in the classic Eagles melody Take it Easy), and Cadillac Ranch, a public art installation in Amarillo, Texas, where 10 Cadillac cars are half buried nose-down in the ground -- in single file. Cadillac Ranch is also a Bruce Springsteen song. They also stopped in Springfield, Ill, where Lincoln' s Tomb is located and the historic Palmer House Hotel in Chicago, 1ll., originally built in 1871 only to be destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire, also in 1871. The hotel was rebuilt in 1875. Route 66 was built in 1926 as the Main Street of America. It' s been called the Mother Road as well as the Will Rogers Highway. It was also one of the original highways in the United States and a major thoroughfare for people who migrated west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. By 1970, a modern four-lane highway bypassed nearly all the segments of original Route 66. Although Route 66 was clearly marked in some states, Robbins said some sections of Route 66 were barely recognizable and many of the buildings along the road were abandoned and left in disrepair. By the time Robbins and two daughters reached Laguna Beach, they had travelled 4,600 kilometres. The car was shipped back to Oakville and the Robbins family flew back home. "It was a great trip," he said. N EW P R O G R A M S S T A R T IN G IN SEPTEM B ER . A P P LY NOW .
