Some of them just happen to be of short stature or little people. Most of the time these athletes grind it out on the field competing against others that have a bit of a height advantage. It's not often they get to compete on and against teams that are com prised of competitors of the same stature. In August three local athletes get their chance to compete for Canada at the World Dwarf Games being held in Guelph Aug. 4-12. Twenty countries are sending ath letes. Justin Kendrick of Oakville and Ethan Warcop of Mississauga com peted in the 2013 games in East Lansing, Mich. Lucy Cartwright of Oakville is competing in her first WDG. This year's event will be the largest ever held for athletes with dwarfism. The goal is to attract athletes from around the world to participate in basketball, soccer, track and field, volleyball, swimming, table tennis, badminton, floor hockey, boccia, ar chery, Kurling (curling without ice), powerlifting and marksmanship. Participants of all ages and ability levels will be encouraged to compete in team and individual sports with others of similar stature. There will also be special events for participants to celebrate interna tional understanding and promote awareness of the dwarf experience worldwide. On-site clinics for athletes and sports professionals will be provided. Participants will be introduced to elite athletes with dwarfism, many of whom have participated in interna tional competitions such as the Parapan Am Games and Paralympics. Five seconds after Peterborough had taken a 6-5 lead in the Major Series La crosse game, Nolan Apers scored to tie the score. But it would take just 22 seconds for the Lakers to regain the lead. Peterborough would then add goals 15 seconds apart late in the period to extend the lead to 9-6. The Lakers carried the momentum into the third period, scoring three times in the first six minutes. Connor Fields scored twice for Oakville, which built an early 3-1 lead. Wesley Berg had a goal and two assists and Ryan Wagner, Dan MaCrae, Bradley Kri and Apers had the Rock's other goals. With the loss, Oakville (6-5-1) remains one point back of Brooklin for third place. Oakville is in Peterborough to face the league-lead ing Lakers (13-1) tonight (Thursday) and then hosts Brampton (2-11-2) Monday, July 24 at 8 p.m. at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre. Oakville Vytis rep basketball team tryouts scheduled lor September The Oakville Vytis Basketball Club is holding 2017-18 rep team tryouts at King's Christian Colle giate in Septem ber. Tryouts are for teams from the youngest group, novice, to junior in girls and from major bantam to juvenile in boys are be ing held starting on Sept. 5. Three, and if necessary, four try out dates are scheduled for each team. Morningstar Taekwon-Do has traditionally been invited to perform a demonstration at the annual Canada Day Festival in Bronte Village.
