For a while it looked as though the company was going to abandon its small, but loyal, core of enthusiast car buyers. First, the MR2, one of the neatest mid-engined fun-mobiles ever to plant a wheel on pavement, bit the dust in the mid 1990s. Next, the awesome Supra, with its killer shark looks and twin-turbo plumbing, went down swinging in 1998. Only the Celica, in the guise of an aging slo-mo coupe with a pricey atti tude, was left to soldier on. In its last few seasons, buyers avoided it, relegat ing that once-proud brand to back-lot obscurity. But now its millennium time, and the world's leading Japanese car maker is diving back into the performance pool. There's a soon-to-be-christened (not to mention affordable) MR-Spyder arriving in showrooms next Spring. In the meantime, Toyota is breathing life back into an old friend by serving up a tasty, new seventh-generation Celica. The Celica's overall design is pure Toyota. That is to say conservative ' overall, but with just the right amount of avant garde '90s style to set it apart from the rest of the herd. The headlights are seductively shaped and seamlessly T incorporated into the fascia. The short, blunted front-end offers both a discrete hood scoop and a power bulge that avoids the seamless-blob look that is commonplace in many other cars -- including other Toyotas. The rest of the design is a deft com bination of creases, tucks and folds that will score high on most onlooker's wow-o-meter. On the inside, the Celica is serious without being intimidating. A nice touch is the available machined alu minum gas, clutch and brake pedals that give the Celica real race-car flavor. Last year's sole Celica powerplant was a 2.2-litre affair that delivered a safe and sane 135 horsepower. For SPEC SHEET 2000 Toyota Celica * Two-door coupe available in GT and GT-S versions. * 1.8-litre DOHC four-cylinder engine, pro ducing 140 (GT) or 180 horsepower (GT-S.). * Five-speed manual (base GT), six-speed manual (base GT-S) or four-speed auto matic transmission (with sport shift on GT-S). * Crisp looking exterior * More horsepower than previous model. * Plenty of available trunk space. * Well-equipped base and optional versions. * Significantly lower price than last year. * Base price: n/a 2000, Toyota has gone with less dis placement .but more ponies. The allnew unit installed in the base Celica GT displaces just 1.8 litres and generates 140 horsepower. The fighting-trim GT-S model runs with the same displacement and DOHC valve setup, but manages to crank out a more magical 180 horsepower. Developed jointly with Yamaha, the GT-S's engine not only gets the same variable valve technology from the less powerful motor, but also has variable cam lift that allows it to max out at near ly 8,000 RPM. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on base Celicas, while a sixspeed manual box is the starting point on the GT-S. Both versions can be optioned with a four-speed automatic, but the GT-S's can be shifted via but tons on the steering wheel, just like in Formula One racing machines. Both Celicas come with a strong dose of standard items such as air con ditioning, six-speaker stereo with cas sette and CD player and power mirrors. The GT-S has all that, plus four-wheel disc brakes, power windows and door locks, cruise control and fog lamps. The premium audio system on the GT-S has also been upgraded to eight speakers. The renewed Celica will go far to restore faith in Toyota's ability to build youthful, exciting cars that look sensa tional, and run even better. Welcome Bar-k, Toyota.
