International opera star Michael Schade opened the S t Andrew's Jubilee 2000 Concert Series last weekend. This series, which continues with three more concerts next year, kicked off with the well-known Oakville tenor, accompanied by William O'Meara and the award-winning Vic toria Scholars, a men's choral ensem ble that includes some of Schade's classmates from his days at St. M ichael's Choir School in Toronto. Schade had just returned from his Vienna home to his Oakville home, via Calgary, for the holidays - his first Christmas at home in seven years, he said. And, he added, the last time he gave a concert in St. Andrew's, $14,000 was raised for his home church. "I think it's the best way I can contribute perhaps not only financial ly, but it also brings the parish togeth er. Even though we (he and his wife, Norine Burgess, also an opera singer) travel the world and the seven seas, we are proud, dedicated Oakvillians. When you have long journeys, only then do you realize how good we have it here," he said, adding that more of Canada's open spaces, how ever, seem to be disappearing each time he returns. And he is returning 3 3 8 -6 3 3 0 -fH 8 ! A i/ X An idea whose time has come. Photo by Peter C. "I have very nice work coming up with the Canadian Opera Company, driving towards keeping our roots here as much as we can," he said, noting that he has been spending more time on this side of the ocean wvmHaRonSeapch.com recently, performing at the M etropoli tan Opera and at the Lyric of Chica go. "It is part o f the parcel when you are doing this type of jo b and you have the honour o f being asked to sing in different places, you have to get up and go." And, added Schade, despite the impression o f glamour that world travel implies to many people, he often feels as though he's been ban ished to these exotic places. "You've been away six weeks and you've missed your daughter's birth day, or whatever," he said, adding that he is hoping he and his wife and three-year-old daughter Sophie will be spending even more time at their Oakville home after September, since Sophie is already registered at St. M ildred's for next year. And while he was in Oakville this time, he was starting to get used to the conveniences of living and per forming in town as he prepared for the sold-out Gala Concert at St. Andrew's last Saturday, which high lighted some seasonal songs as well as some secular music. "This is the first o f four fabulous concerts, as part of a millennium series, and I certainly enjoy not hav ing to drive to Toronto. I can stay at home before coming down (to St. Andrew's)," he said with delight. "It (the concert series) really is a nice (See `Concerts' on page A15) YVA.
